Obituary for MSgt. Gerald Dwain Evans

September 23, 1939 - September 14, 2019
San Antonio, Texas | Age 79

Gerald Dwain Evans, née Villarreal, 79, of San Antonio, Texas passed away on September 14, 2019, at Methodist Stone Oak Hospital. After a lengthy illness, Gerald left this life surrounded by his close family and friends, nine days before his 80th birthday. Fondly referred to as "Joe" in his early years, Gerald was born in San Antonio on September 23, 1939 to Gilbert and Mildred Villarreal and was the second of four children. He is survived by: his wife, Judith; his three sons, Michael, Brian and Douglas; his brother, Mike and his sister, Frankie; and, his seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his younger brother, Ronnie.

After graduating from Jefferson High School, Gerald served more than ten years in the U.S. Navy, having the privilege of being assigned to the U.S.S. Ranger on her maiden voyage. He was a flight crew chief and traveled continually over the Pacific Ocean. Gerald then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, where he served for another ten years. After proudly serving his country for more than twenty years, Gerald retired from the military at Lackland Air Force Base, having earned the rank of Master Sergeant. Gerald then followed his heart to serve in another capacity; he enrolled at San Antonio College and became a Registered Nurse. Gerald worked to provide care to patients at multiple hospitals in San Antonio, before officially retiring in 2001.

In addition to being a patriot, anyone who knew Gerald knew him to be steadfast in life, having a huge, compassionate heart. His love for his family and his country were second only to his love for and commitment to his Lord Jesus.
