Obituary for Gloria L. Hazel

March 21, 1925 - July 24, 2020
San Antonio, Texas | Age 95

Gloria L. Hazel, age 95, passed away on Friday, July 24, 2020 at The Mission, Blue Skies of Texas, in San Antonio.

She was born in Longview, TX on March 21, 1925. Married March 12, 1943, she then traveled the world as the wife of a career USAF pilot before settling back in Texas in her later years. She and John H. Hazel celebrated 55 years of marriage before his death in 1998. Managing their large family of six children amid the sometimes-challenging circumstances of military life spoke to her resilience and strength, but she was also known for her creativity. She began writing poetry in childhood and always enjoyed painting and drawing. She pursued a career in real estate while living in Fort Worth and McAllen, Texas. At the age of 57 she enrolled in college, graduating with honors from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1986 with a BA in art. In the years of her widowhood, she continued a lifelong love of art and reading, she tutored local school children in reading, and she loved playing Scrabble. She was a longtime member of Saint Andrews Episcopal Church in San Antonio. She resided at Air Force Village (later named Blue Skies of Texas) in San Antonio for 21 years where she had many wonderful friends and remained well connected to her large extended family with children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren living all over the country and abroad. Her family is very grateful for the care and support she received from the staff at Arnold House, The Mission, and Hospice Care at Blue Skies of Texas.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John H. Hazel, and her parents, Oliver A. Bright and Inez Gibson, and her brother, Oliver Bright. Gloria is survived by her sons, Arthur (Maria) Hazel, John (Cynthia) Hazel, James (JoAnne) Hazel, and Joseph (Pam) Hazel, her daughters Dana Hazel (Michael Vespasiano) and Risa Hazel; eleven grandchildren, Sarah, Scott, Stephanie, John, Jennifer, Jacqueline, Christina, Clifford, Nicholas, Gabriel, Jennifer; and numerous great grandchildren.
