Obituary for Gretchen K. Toliver

October 26, 1921 - December 21, 2018
San Antonio, Texas | Age 97

Gretchen K. Toliver, 97, passed away on Friday, December 21, 2018 in San Antonio, Texas.

Born to Clarence and Caroline Kemper on Oct. 26th, 1921 in Idaho Falls, Idaho, Gretchen lived a full, long life constantly in the company of family and friends. In her formative years, she lived on the farm with her family eventually going to school to earn her associate degree in Teaching from University of Pocatello (Idaho State). Shortly thereafter, she married her first husband 2nd Lt. Jack Richards USAAC and later widowed by him in a C47 training accident during WWII.

She married John O Toliver October 4th, 1947 after meeting him on a bus trip. She lived the life of a military wife, traveling with him to many different locals including Duluth, Min., Great Falls, Mont., and Heidelberg, Germany. All the while, she raised two daughters Kristan and Susan and taught in local schools and volunteered as a nurse at local hospitals. After retiring from USAF as a Lt. Col, the family moved to Detroit, Mich.

In 1984, Gretchen and John finally retired to Melbourne Florida, where they helped raise five grandchildren. In retired life, she was a voracious reader and avid bridge player. The two of them also continued traveling the world often taking cruises to various countries.

In 2006, the two of them moved to San Antonio, Texas living at Villa de San Antonio. Unfortunately, she was widowed again on January 10, 2009 when John passed away. She moved to the Franklin Park shortly thereafter where she was on the new resident welcoming committee. She continued devouring books, at least one every other day even despite eyesight issues and playing bridge until she recently passed away.

Though the family mourns, they are comforted knowing that she is finally spending Christmas with her husbands in heaven.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, 2nd Lt. Jack Richards USAAC and Lt. Col. John O. Toliver, USAF Ret. Gretchen is survived by her daughters, Col. Kristan Wolf USAF Ret. (Col. E. George USAF Ret.) and Susan Covert (Lt. Col. David USMC Ret.); grandchildren, Maj. Gretchen Dues USAF (Maj. Brian USAF), Spc. Agent Michael Covert VA. State Trooper (Sarah), Maj. Heidi Sykas USMC (Maj. William USMC), Stephen Wolf (Desiree), and Laura Wolf (Erika). The family will receive friends from 1300 to 1700, Friday, January 4th, 2019, at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
