Obituary

Helen Arciniega Garza was called by the Lord on Tuesday, September 4, 2018 at the age of 95. Helen was the daughter of Gregorio Navarro Arciniega and his wife, Adela. Her mother died giving birth and she was adopted as an infant by her aunt and uncle, Santiago Guerra and Estella Navarro Cantu Guerra. Mrs. Garza is preceded in death by her husband, Rudolph J. Garza. She is survived by her children, Dr. Rudolph Garza and wife, Annie, Christine Hollan and husband, James, Robert Garza and wife, Julie; grandchildren, Richard Garza, Dr. Lori Anna Dees, Lillian Scribbick and husband, Frank, David Garza, Amber Garza, and Robert J. Garza; and one great-grandson, Matthew David Garza.
Helen attended Brackenridge High School, Alamo Community college and St. Mary's University. After raising her children, she worked at St. Mary's University, then the Catholic Chancery until retirement.
Helen was the great-granddaughter of Maria Gertrudes Navarro, survivor of the fall of the Alamo in 1836 and also the great-great-granddaughter of Miguel Arciniega and Jose Angel Navarro both of who held many positions of importance during the forming of San Antonio de Bejar including legislator, land commissioner, and mayor. Helen was a member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas where she held a position of historian. Helen was the organizing President of the Laredo, Texas chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas and also a founding board member of Friends of Casa Navarro, San Antonio, Texas where she was a historian and chaplain.
