Obituary

On June 1st at 10:00 pm a glorious reunion was held in Heaven. Helen Louise Hamblen Wilson joined her sweetheart George W her parents Rachel Louise Pittman Hamblen and Grady Allen Hamblen as well as her brothers GA Hamblen, John Hamblen everybody called him as Bud, Wayne Hamblen and baby sister Betty Jean Hamblen Smith. Even her Mother and Father in law Annie and John Carroll Wilson were there to celebrate her arrival.

Helen was born in San Antonio, Texas on March 5, 1933. Her family lived in Goliad, Texas but her Daddy wanted her born in a Hospital, so they came to San Antonio for her arrival. She attended Goliad High School and was a cheerleader, basketball player and a star in the High School plays. After she graduated from high school she returned to San Antonio and attended Durham Business School. Acquiring her degree from Business School, she lived at Ms. Bells Boarding House on Bellnap Place with her best friend from Goliad Helen Cammack. It so happened Helen Irene had a very handsome cousin named George W Wilson. When George W met Helen Louise, they were smitten with each other and in 1952 they were married and spent 61 glorious years together.

They had 4 beautiful daughters, Betsy Wilson Brock (George Killingsworth), J. Carol Wilson(David DeHoyos), Cindy Flood (Paul) and MaryAnne Wilson(John Willborn). In addition to their daughters they had a large loving family including grandchildren Paul Flood, James Flood, Riki McCune (Russell), Tracy Echols (Jason), Preston Brock (Marisa), Katie Rodriguez (Robert Jr), Theresa VanDerHeck (Harl), Ginny Marotta and Garrett Marotta. Great grandchildren Gabriel, Daryl, Troy, Alyssa, Paul, Ryan, John, Logan, Weston, Mila, Luke, Robert III.

They were active members of Shearer Hills Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School, was in WMU, sang in the choir and directed the production of The Last Supper where she drafted George to build the sets. She was a gifted teacher of her 3-year class at Coker UMC Pre-School for 20 years. Upon their retirements she and George spent the next 2 years as volunteer missionaries with Baptist FMB in the Philippines working with refugees from Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia and then 2 years later they volunteered in Venezuela. They loved traveling the USA visiting many of the refugees they taught at PRPC in the Philippines.

Helen had a love for art, writing poetry, short stories and crafting keepsake baby nightshirts and blue bridal garters as precious gifts. She loved the outdoors teaching her daughters to play softball and water ski from the moment they could stand. She and George were avid travelers around Germany and Ireland then searching for the best whitewater adventures they could find touching every state, but not making it to Alaska even though George did spend 2 years on the USS Alaska. They would seek adventure with their lifelong friends the Alexanders, Cooks, Foxes and Coopers taking them to Costa Rica and Cancun.

She will be sorely missed by her daughters, sons-in-law, grandchildren and great grandchildren and all those who knew her, all taking peace knowing she is reunited with her Savior, sweetheart and family.

We would like to thank Home Instead Senior Care caregivers and staff for the loving care they gave Helen the last year and a huge heartfelt thank you and appreciation to Creekside Personal Home Care, Kim and Rodney Dean along with Hope Hospice. Mother was given so much love and care up until her last minute. We are blessed to have you there taking care of our Mother.
