Obituary

Herbert S. Holland Jr. died on May 20, 2018, after a sudden illness. Herb was born in Ithaca, New York, on October 11, 1924, to Herbert and Mary (Bride) Holland. He was their only child.

After serving as an enlisted soldier with the 696th Armored Field Artillery Battalion in the European theater during World War II, he returned to his hometown of Ithaca. He graduated from Cornell University and was commissioned as an officer in the Reserves in 1948. A year later he completed the MBA program at Cornell, and shortly after that he married the love of his life, Elizabeth McAllister, in Ithaca on August 27, 1949. He completed the Field Artillery Basic Course as a Reserve officer and was planning a career as a civilian accountant, but he changed his mind when he heard the big guns fire at Fort Sill. He instead became a Regular Army officer and served a total of twenty seven years of active service in the United States Army, including additional combat tours during the Korean War and Vietnam War. His decorations include the Bronze Star Medal and the Legion of Merit, and he retired at the rank of Colonel. With his wife and their ten children, Herb lived in Germany and many places in the US. After retiring from the Army in 1975, Herb & Betty lived in Duncan, OK, and in New Braunfels, TX, before relocating to The Towers in San Antonio in 2004. Herb devoted his life to his family, the Catholic Church, the Field Artillery, and the United States Army. He loved to travel with Betty, and he enjoyed reading, stamp collecting, genealogy, games, and working on his computer. At the Towers he also enjoyed socializing with his many friends.

He was preceded in death by his youngest son, LTC Daniel Holland, who was killed in action in Iraq in 2006, and by his wife Betty, who died in 2007. Herb is survived by sons Robert & wife Carol, Rochester, MN; Mark & wife Josie, Irving, TX; David & wife Mary Ann, New Braunfels, TX; John & wife Rita, Coon Rapids, MN; daughters Patricia Nixon & husband Tom, Oklahoma City, OK; Mary Ralya & husband Steve, Brenham, TX; Claire Nieswiadomy & husband Michael, Denton, TX; Catherine Ochoa & husband Joe, New Braunfels, TX; and Elizabeth Blute & husband Peter, Houston, TX; and son Daniel's widow, Sheryl, Boerne, TX; thirty grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on May 29th at St. Pius X Catholic Church in San Antonio. Interment with full military honors will be held at 9:30 AM on May 30th at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to any military veterans charity or pro-life organization.
