Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of Hermelinda B. Pompa announces her unexpected passing at the age of 86, on Thursday April 12, 2018 in Chesapeake, Virginia. Hermelinda was a native of Kingsville, Texas and later settled with her family in Washington, D.C. where she received her Bachelors and Master's degree in Clinical Psychology from George Mason University and was a licensed Clinical Social Worker. Hermelinda's career in social services included position's as Deputy Director of Andromeda Hispano Mental Health Center and Lutheran Social Services. She went on to become the Program Director of National Conference of Interracial Justice and served in the White House Office of Presidential Personnel. Her final positions were with the U.S. Department of Labor as a Presidential Appointee under Bill Clinton as a Special Assistant to the Director of the Women's Bureau and lastly served as the Mexican and American Solidarity Foundation's Director of U.S. Operations. Hermelinda was a lifelong advocate of education and in her retirement, was the founder of The Hermelinda B. Pompa endowed scholarship at Texas A & M, the Gilbert G. Pompa Scholarships at Devine High School, and the Gilbert G. Pompa Scholarships at Memorial High School in Devine and San Antonio, Texas. Hermelinda was preceded in death by husband; Gilbert Gutierrez Pompa, her father and mother; Jose Maria Bocanegra, and Jesusa Bocanegra-Gomez. She is survived by her daughter's Dr. Janiece Lynn Pompa of Salt Lake City, Utah and Darlene Pompa O'Toole (Tony) of Charlotte, North Carolina and a son Gilbert "Russell" Pompa Sr. (Lisa) of Chesapeake, Virginia. Hermelinda will be forever remembered by her grandchildren Jenni Marie, Russell Jr., Nicolas, and Danielle. The family will receive friends from 4 p.m. – 6 p.m. Thursday, April 19th, at Porter Loring Mortuary in San Antonio, Texas.

Interment will follow in Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery at 11:00 AM on Thursday, April 26, 2018. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hispanic Scholarship Fund at hsf.net or The Alzheimer's Association at alz.org.
