... dedicated herself completely to her family and her faith

Obituary

Irene Casares Arévalo, 86, passed peacefully into the arms of the Lord on November 17, 2018 in San Antonio. Born on April 18, 1932 in Nixon, TX she was the third of five children to parents Moses and Josefina.

Despite attending school only to the 3rd grade, Irene managed all of the affairs of her household, caring for her husband and six children during 70 years of marriage. Because of her own limited opportunities, she strongly encouraged education in her own family. She fostered a love for reading in her children by taking them to the library, reading to them aloud, and making sure they had their own library cards as soon as they could print their own names. She proudly watched them accomplish their academic, artistic, and personal goals as they grew.

Irene was passionate about cooking and well-known for her excellent cooking skills, especially in Tex-Mex cuisine. Many say she made the best tamales ever tasted! In later years, she took great joy in cooking for her precious grandchildren. She also delighted in the hobby of quilting for several decades of her life. Her community of family, friends, neighbors and church were often beneficiaries of her beautiful, hand-made creations.

Irene dedicated herself completely to her family and her faith. Her love, generosity and protection of these deepest devotions never ceased. She was a very active member of St. Ann Catholic Church where she served many roles, including Eucharistic Minister, Sacristan, CCD teacher, festival chairperson, and member of the Guadalupana Society and the Altar Society. Her absence will be profoundly experienced by the many people who were touched through knowing her.

She was preceded in death by her brother Gilbert Casares and her son Alex Arévalo, Jr. Irene is survived by her beloved husband, Alex Arévalo; son, John Arévalo (Donna); daughters Isadora Wong (Kendrick), Mary Gibson (David), Belinda Castillo (Al), Jessica Gavia (George); grandchildren Jacqueline (Chris), Laura (Jeremy), Valerie (Zach), Alexandra, Amelia, Gianna, Jacob, Joseph, Rebecca, Lila, and Jack; great-grandchildren Lianne, Jude, and Julia; sisters Olivia, Lydia, and Amelia; numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, November 23, 2018 at Porter Loring Mortuary. A rosary will be prayed immediately afterward.

A funeral mass will take place at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 24, 2018 at St. Ann Catholic Church, 210 Saint Ann Street, San Antonio, TX, 78201 with interment to follow at San Fernando Cemetery 2, 746 Castroville Road, San Antonio, TX 78237.
