Obituary

Irene Mitzi Ferrer Ruttan, age 86, passed away peacefully to heaven on Wednesday, August 28, 2019. She joined her mother, Herminia (Mina) Ferrer; father, Francisco Ferrer; and her younger sister, Myrna Ferrer Samperi.
She was born in Veracruz, Mexico on January 30, 1933, and moved to the United States with her mother and sister after her father passed away in 1944, finally settling in Houston, Texas.

Irene worked as a secretary for the security office in the Shamrock Hotel in Houston, Texas where she met Elvis Presley and many more celebrities.

She met her husband, Lt. John Ruttan, then an Air Force navigator at Ellington AFB, in 1956. They were married in Sacramento, California on June 22, 1957. They were married 62 years and had 3 children: Mitzi, Michelle, and John.

Irene was an amazing military wife and mother, taking care of the children all alone when John went to Vietnam. They traveled the world to such places as Europe and Turkey. Once John retired from the military in San Antonio, Irene went to school at St. Phillips College where she received an Associates in Occupational Therapy. Irene went on to work at an Alzheimer's Unit for 28 years, where sometimes she was older than her patients. She retired in 2001.

Irene had a great love for all animals, and she continuously worked to find homes for strays, sometimes bringing them home. She also had a great love of history and music, especially the music of Beethoven. She was always concerned about others, and always found ways to help those in need. She even tutored her children in Math and Reading for which they were very grateful.

Irene's faith was very important to her as she loved to say the rosary and the Divine Mercy Chaplet.

Irene is survived by her husband, John Ruttan; 3 children, Mitzi Ruttan-Leatherland and husband Selby Anderson, Michelle Weekley and husband Carl, and John Ruttan II; niece, Myrna Samperi Sanders and husband David; and 3 grandchildren, Jennifer Weekley, Summer Ruttan, and John Austin Ruttan. The family will receive friends from time to time a.m./p.m., day, date, at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
