Obituary for Col. Jack C. Carmichael

October 11, 1917 - February 15, 2019
San Antonio, Texas | Age 101

Col. Jack C. Carmichael passed away peacefully on February 15, 2019 at the age of 100.
Jack was born on October 11, 1918 in Dodd City, Texas, the son of Edna Fay Gay and Horace Henry Carmichael. He and his brothers Richard and H.H. "Dixie" spent time in small Texas towns where his grandfather was a Presbyterian minister. During those times his father was "wild catting" for oil, but eventually moved to Austin. His father became Head of the Department of Public Safety and Assistant Adjutant General of the Texas National Guard. Jack graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School, and earned a Bachelor's of Science in Civil Engineering Degree from the University of Texas and a Master of Science in Engineering Degree from Johns Hopkins University.

Jack married Doris Eloise Heuschkel in 1942. They had 3 children: Cynthia, Richard and Lawrence. Together they provided a strong loving family life for 45 years, until Doris passed away in 1987. When grandchildren arrived, they purchased a house in Key Allegro and brought the family together on the Texas coast for years. Many happy memories of those summers remain for all ages.

Jack then married Ms. Margaret McDonald and lived in Austin until she passed away 13 years later.

Jack moved to San Antonio on September 11, 2001. He has enjoyed his life at the ARC with friends and especially with his wife Opal. He was active in Kiwanis, Computer Club, and his poker group. Jack is survived by his children: Cynthia and Bill Oliver, Richard Carmichael, Larry and Brigid Carmichael; his 8 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
A service will be held on Monday, February 25, 2019 at 10:00am at Cheever Chapel at the ARC. Following, a memorial service will be held at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery, pavilion 5, at 2:45 pm.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Fisher House and/or Texas Scottish Rite Hospital in Dallas.
