Obituary

James "Jim" William Pettinos Jr. was born in Verona, New Jersey on Feb 2, 1927 to James W Pettinos and Franziska Sommer Pettinos. Raised in San Antonio, he called Texas home until his passing on July 24, 2020.

Enlisting in the Navy at age 17, Jim served as a radio man on 6 different ships in the Pacific during WWII. He was in Tokyo Bay in 1945 when the Peace treaty with Japan was signed. Later he received a commission and served in the USNR as an Ensign.

Jim started as a lineman's helper at CPS Energy in 1948. After graduation from Southern Methodist Univ. in 1950 with a degree in Electrical Engineering, he progressed to management and retired in 1992. He is a Past President and Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers and received the Centennial Medal for extraordinary achievement. He was a licensed Professional Engineer and member of the Live Wire Club.

He became a member of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, Alpha Phi Omega (the National Service Fraternity of former Boy Scouts), Kappa Sigma, and Honorary Mathematic Fraternity Pi Mu Epsilon.

He was an active Mason for 73 years, a Shriner and Eastern Star member. He was a long time member of San Antonio Bexar-Kiwanis serving as a past president. An active member of St. Andrew's UMC, he served in many committees and was a chairman of the administrative board for 3 years. He was passionate about the education of young children, having served as a Scoutmaster and mentoring at Bonham Elem. for three decades with the Kiwanis.

He made friends easily and kept them for decades. His college friends from SMU, all his fishing, hunting and work buddies at CPS Energy will miss him. His family and multitude of friends knew him as a man who was the spirit of hospitality and service to others, with a heart of love and compassion.

Jim's parents preceded him in death, as did his wife of 43 years, Sue Campe Pettinos and their son, Warren, and grandson Benjamin. He is survived by Warren's wife Dianne Pettinos, Kay and John Chance, Matt and Cathy Pettinos, grandchildren Julie Lindsey(Ken), Jordan Pettinos, Abby Pettinos, Franklin Chance(Jessica), Susannah Chance and Nicholas Pettinos, along with 13 great-grandchildren. As a widower, Jim married Barbara Sue Baker Webster Pettinos and had a wonderful loving marriage for 20 years. She preceded him in death by just 13 days. Barbara Sue's children, Carrie(Ken), Cristie(Russ), and Julie, their children and grandchildren also knew of his warmth, kindness and attention.
