Obituary for Mr. James William Leavitt

October 17, 1960 - May 23, 2018
Texas | Age 57

James William Leavitt, 57, passed away on Wednesday, May 23, 2018 in San Antonio due to complications from esophageal cancer. He spent most of his time at his children's sports games, performances and other activities. He loved bragging about his children and wife because he was so proud of their achievements. He always said, "Shame on them for asking me about my family." James was born on October 17, 1960, in Lawton, Oklahoma. Graduating from High School in Manhattan, Kansas, James went on to serve in the Army for 6 years, becoming a helicopter pilot and receiving the Army Service Ribbon and Marksman Award. After being honorably discharged as a Captain, James attended Kansas State University where he met his wife, Susan and participated in the collegiate rowing team at the university. James graduated with a Bachelor's of Arts Degree in Business and continued his education at Wichita State University to earn a Bachelor's of Science in Computer Science. James and Susan were married in 1990. Over his career James worked in computer programming and then moved to hardware and networks. He enjoyed many hobbies such as learning about American and European history, firearms shooting, and participating in Boy Scouts with his son. He enjoyed watching shows about past wars, political backgrounds, strategic warfare technology and western movies. His friends and family will remember him for his smile, honesty, and down to earth personality. In addition, James was very active in volunteering with Habitat for Humanity through his church St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church. He would work on the roofs of the houses being built with fellow Knights of Columbus members. The volunteers working on the house were always happy to see him and enjoyed many stories that he would tell while working on top of the house. When James and his family moved to San Antonio, he worked as a contractor, then as a civil servant on the computer network for the Army at Fort Sam Houston. He was very talented with technology software and hardware programming having worked with computer systems since 1988. James is preceded in death by his parents, James and Helen Leavitt. He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Susan Leavitt; daughters, Cathy, Jackie, and Maggie; son, Andy; brothers, John Lehn, Pete Lehn and wife, Lauren; and sister, Jerri Steinlage.
