Obituary

Janet Airheart, born August 26, 1941 in Concord, North Carolina, died July 9, 2017. She was preceded in death by her father and mother; W.T. Airheart and Sylvia A. Airheart, and her sister Jacqueline Airheart. After graduating from Asheville High School, she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wake Forest University in 1963 and continued as an active alumnus.

Janet's successful career in the retail business began when she was a child working for her grandmother's drugstore in North Carolina. At age 14, she began working at Ivey's Department Store in Asheville. After college, Ivey's hired Janet as a buyer where she traveled and lived in several cities. In 1968, she purchased a ladies retail store and became the co-owner of Robinson's Stores in San Antonio with lifetime friend Barbara Betts.

After selling the Robinson's stores, she joined Joske's, which later became Dillard's and was there until her retirement in 1996 as a divisional merchandise manager.

Never one to fully retire, Janet was one of the founders of Aztec Events serving as General Manager. Along with her friend Fay Seeman, they created a high end, specialized party rental business. Janet also became involved with the Boysville Women's Auxiliary, where she worked at the Boysville Thrift Shop leveraging her pricing, retail and merchandising experience to benefit the charity.

As formidable as Janet could be in business, she also was incredibly generous and loving to her family as well as her many cherished friends and godchildren. Never having children of her own, she cherished her moments as godmother, guidance counselor and mentor.

The consummate hostess, Janet hosted every holiday and served many meals to her extended family with style, grace and fantastic cooking. We all will remember her welcoming smile. She felt one of her mission's in life was to care for her mother and sister, which she did with incredible compassion for many years. Her generous spirit to care for people in need extended to anyone who called on her for support and help.

Survivors include her aunt, Mary Ammons, and several cousins; Joe, Josh, John, and Jan Airheart in North Carolina and Ben Dendy in Virginia. In addition, she left many friends including Karen Anderson, Jack Hartman, Chachi Hawkins, Tom Karam, Patricia Pena and Yvonne Wood. Through her long-time connection to the Betts family, she is survived by Richard Betts, Howard and Peggy Betts as well as her godchildren Brooke, Mark, Najette, Jack and Robert Betts. She is also survived by godson David Bynum, M.D., and her dear protégé and good friend Sonia Briseno. Her "adopted" grandchildren whom she adored included Grayson Betts, Rylan Betts, and Trey Briseno.

Janet's endless faith gives us peace that she is at rest with the Lord. She will be sorely missed on this Earth.
