Obituary for Ms. Janet Mayer

August 31, 1935 - August 28, 2018
San Antonio, Texas | Age 82

Janet Mayer, age 82, passed away on Tuesday, August 28, 2018 at Kindred Hospice in San Antonio, Texas. Janet was a wonderful mom, musician, teacher, friend, and former wife. She was born Janet Sue Todd in Fairmount, Indiana, on August 31, 1935. The daughter of two Quaker ministers, she grew up playing for evangelical revivals, concerts, camp meetings, and church services in addition to classical piano recitals. She even played for a Billy Graham revival and toured extensively playing for musical groups in college. Janet earned two master's degrees, one in music and one in education. She attended Marion College (now Indiana Wesleyan University), Ball State University, and the University of Portland. She was an Air Force wife and travelled and lived all over the world. She taught many students at many levels in many subjects, including music, but spent the majority of her career teaching math at Park Village Elementary School. She served on advisory boards for the state of Texas. She was the organist and choir accompanist for over 23 years at Windcrest United Methodist Church, where she was named Organist Emeritus after her retirement. She also developed the choir and played organ and piano at the Army Resident Community Protestant Chapel where she served as Music Director for a number of years.
She was a mother who imparted faith, music, love, and strength to her only living child, Kathy. She was a caretaker during many weekday afternoons and some evenings for her only living granddaughter, Hannah, during the first six years of Hannah's life. Hannah was her "Best Buddy".
Janet touched people with her inner light and sparkle. She truly enjoyed life and loved people. She gave freely of her gifts and talents and showed genuine concern for others. During the course of her life, she encountered many life-threatening health challenges, some of which were so rare that she was featured at conferences and written about in medical papers, journals, and books. She rarely complained and endured her ordeals with quiet strength, grace and a smile. She loved God and lived a life that exemplified that love.
Janet is preceded in death by her parents, Rev. Paul Todd and Mrs. Madeline (Payne) Todd; her sister, Betty (Todd) Love; and her former father-in-law, Eric Mayer and mother-in-law, Joan (Goddard) Mayer. Janet is survived by her daughter, Katherine (Kathy) Michelle Mayer; her granddaughter, Hannah Melody Mayer; her nieces, Linda Sue Love, Sherrie Lynn Love, Jennifer (Rueb) White, and Erica (Rueb) Mazur; her former sister-in-law, Carolyn (Mayer) Rueb and brother-in-law, Jim Rueb; numerous cousins; and her former husband, Col. Terrence Mayer.
