Obituary

JO ANN SCHLIESING GITTINGER
September 26, 1931 – March 26, 2018

Jo Ann was born to Joseph and Thelma Schliesing. She attended Agnes Cotton Elementary, Mark Twain Junior High and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1949, all with high marks. Following graduation, Jo Ann worked for Southwestern Bell and then the Civil Service at Kelly Air Force Base. She made a faith-based pilgrimage to Europe, including Lourdes, France and Fatima, Portugal with her high school girlfriends in 1951. She married the love of her life Leonard J. Gittinger, Jr. in October of 1952. Jo Ann gave birth to her first two daughters in August of 1953 and October of 1954, respectively. Leonard became an US Army Officer and Jo Ann an Army Officer's wife in 1955. The couple was posted in Fort Sill, Oklahoma and then Fort Riley, Kansas, where Jo Ann gave birth to her first son in 1956. Buzzy and Jo Ann were transferred to Charlottesville, Virginia and then back to Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio in 1958. Leonard was honorably discharged in 1959 and Jo Ann gave birth to her third daughter in 1960 and her second son in 1964 in San Antonio. She was a devoted, doting and beloved mother, grandmother, wife and friend. She was a sublime decorator, a fantastic cook, an accomplished home maker and a terrific and thoughtful social hostess.

Jo Ann became an active Member of the San Antonio Liederkranz wives in 1962 and thereafter served as chair and assistant chair in hosting, decorating, preparing, serving food and refreshments and cleaning-up after many Liederkranz concerts, parties and social functions throughout her adult life. She was also an active member of the Sultanas De Bejar, the Madonna Club, the Little Flower Family Guild and the St Monica's Guild. Jo Ann lived a quiet, dignified, and productive life of service as an amazing and adoring mother, wife and home maker. She was fascinated by and devoted her spare-time to studying medicine, alternative cures, nutrition and dietary supplements. She worked briefly as a real estate agent and helped to raise her granddaughter Marisa Gittinger. She made several extended trips to Germany with the Liederkranz and made fast friendships with several of the German people she met there.

Jo Ann was a devout Catholic and regularly attended Mass. She loved the Lord Jesus Christ with all of her heart and had her eyes firmly fixed on the prize of eternal life, her Lord and His Heaven. She was known for her kindness, generosity, sincerity, positivity, compassion, empathy, love, sweetness of spirit, goodness, wisdom, loyalty, faithfulness and fierce advocacy for her children and grandchildren. She helped make Lake Dunlap and the Rockport coast house welcoming second and third homes for her family and friends. Jo Ann passed away like she lived: quietly, with little fanfare and a minimum of fuss; seemingly, as always, intending to minimize any trouble or inconvenience for her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her in laws Leonard J. "Buck" and Katherine Laager Gittinger, her son Joseph Anton and her sister in law Janine Parker. She is survived by her brother John and sister in law Diane Schliesing, her daughters Jo Lynne, Susan and Brenda, son Leonard John, III; grandchildren Ashley and Mason Melton, Brandon Thurman; Jordan Bridges; Marisa, Leonard IV, Erin, Joshua, Grace, and Jaron Gittinger; and great-grandson Ty Kelly. The family extends our sincerest gratitude to Jo Ann's caregivers at Christus Santa Rosa Hospital, the San Antonio Liederkranz and St. Joseph's Catholic Church.

Services will be Friday, April 6, 2018 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church downtown with visitation from 1:00 to 2:00 pm, Celebratory Mass at 2:00 pm, Reverends Mario Marzocchi and Ken Hannon officiating. A reception will follow at the new St. Joseph Rectory/Hall adjacent to the church.
