Obituary for Dr. Joe B. Whitley

August 27, 1933 - July 11, 2018
San Antonio, Texas | Age 84

Dr. Joe B. Whitley was born August 27, 1933, in Smithville, Texas. He was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-eight years, Jerre Whitley. Joe and Jerre are survived by their four daughters: Pam, Sandy, Dede, and Kim. The family is blessed with seven grandchildren and three foster grandchildren.

Joe attended Texas A&M University before completing dental school at the University of Texas in Houston. Joe was an avid Aggie football fan who continued to attend games beyond his 80th birthday. Joe was commissioned as a captain in the U.S. Army then stationed in Lawton, Oklahoma. Joe was an accomplished marksman much to the horror of the wildlife in the Texas panhandle.

Joe and Jerre, along with their eldest child, moved to Hereford, Texas in 1961. The family resided in Hereford, Texas until 1976 and welcomed three more children to the family. While living in Hereford, Joe raised the money to upgrade the local football stadium with an all-weather track. The track benefitted the whole community, but no one more than Sandy Whitley who was a superstar track athlete.

The family moved from Hereford, Texas in 1976 to San Antonio. The move was caused, in part, because the Whitley family supported a teacher who was fired due to his membership in the A.C.L.U. The teacher ultimately successfully sued the school district in federal district court in Amarillo, Texas. However, the support of the teacher resulted in local school officials seeking to expel Sandy Whitley for being gay. Joe and Jerre uprooted the family including a fifteen-year established, thriving dental practice and moved to San Antonio to keep their children safe.

Joe established a dental practice on the eastside of San Antonio in 1976. The practice served a previously underserved population of adults and children. The practice was solely born from his imagination and relentless work ethic. Later in his career, Joe designed and funded two mobile dental clinics that traveled across Texas. He developed the fully operational mobile clinics with Pam and Sandy who managed them. Countless adults and children were provided access to dental care for the first time in their lives. Joe extended his working career to his late seventies despite his ability to retire.

Joe was the primary caregiver to his wife for the last eleven years of her life. Jerre passed away at home with Joe on March 30, 2016. Joe attempted C.P.R. to save her life injuring his shoulder in the process. Joe endured six months of physical therapy afterward. Joe was an active and beloved grandfather who delighted in the grandkids. His influence in their life is indelible.
