Obituary

Joe Shaver, 91, of San Antonio, TX died August 6, 2017 after a short illness. Joe's parents, three siblings and Bea his loving wife of 53 years, predeceased him. Surviving are three children, Cynthia (Stephen) Hopkins, Susan (Walter) Johnson and Neal (Marycke) Shaver; seven grandchildren, Megan, Malinda, Alex, Michael, Christopher, Rachel and Peter and three great grandchildren.

Joe, born in Arkansas, was the first in his family to graduate from college with a BA from the University of Missouri. He spent a short time in Japan in the Army during WWII. Upon his return home, he met and married Bea, then moved with his first employer Lago Oil to Aruba. The family stayed there until 1962, when Joe transferred to NYC, commuting daily to Rockefeller Center, working in the controller's office at Exxon.

Upon retirement from Exxon, Joe moved to San Antonio and did office accounting for 22 years with his son Neal's company, Precious Stones Unlimited.

Joe was devoted to the Christian faith. He and Bea established the first Church of Christ in Aruba where he served as the minister for five years. He was also instrumental in growing a Church of Christ in White Plains, NY and after moving to San Antonio was an active member at the Northside Church of Christ. For the past 30-plus years he served as an elder, taught workshops, greeted new members and filled many other roles.

Joe also loved playing bridge, listening to classic music and traveling (thanks to Bea) around the world, visiting over 100 countries.

Joe wanted the words "he kept the faith" to be inscribed on his tombstone; he spent 91 years serving others. Those who knew him will miss his stories, his sense of humor, his laugh and his smile.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Jo Ann Scruggs School in Jereissati, Brazil, which has a building named after Bea Shaver. Checks should be made out to the Northside Church of Christ, 19818 Highway 281 N., San Antonio, TX 78258.

Services will be held this Saturday at the Northside Church of Christ, with visitation at 1:00 pm, the service at 2:00 pm followed by a reception. A private burial will be held next week at Fort Sam Houston.
