Obituary for John W. Buchek

July 21, 1946 - January 25, 2018
San Antonio, Texas | Age 71

John was a kind, gentle and selfless man. He devoted his life to his family and business.

John Wallace Buchek, 71, passed away in his home after a short battle with cancer on Thursday, January 25, 2018 in San Antonio surrounded by his loving family. He was born on July 21, 1946 in San Antonio to Effie Louise Wallace and Harvey Buchek.

John is a graduate of Alamo Heights High School. Upon graduation he attended the University of Texas at Austin and then returned home to begin a career that would span nearly 50 years with AMC Industries, formerly Alamo Machinery Company. John joined his father at the company that his grandfather started in downtown San Antonio on S. Flores in 1924. When John began his career, the company had evolved from a farm implement machinery dealer into the distribution of domestic water pumps and related equipment. At a young age John had a great vision and energy to expand and diversify the company. Early in his career he recognized an increasing demand for automated lawn sprinkler systems and a promising future for economic growth in San Antonio. John pursued and was able to secure exclusive distribution rights for key lines of irrigation equipment. This would prove to be a pivotal time in the company's 90-year history. Over the next 40 years the company expanded to numerous locations in Texas and Oklahoma. In 1997 his son, Tres joined the company to work alongside him for the next 20 years. In 2014, the company's 90th year in operation, AMC was sold with John's blessing marking the end of his successful career. John was very proud of the company history and the fact that it was continually owned and operated by he and his brother and their family for 90 years. He was so grateful for the friendships he had with staff and so many others he worked with for so many years.

John was a kind, gentle and selfless man. He devoted his life to his family and business. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon. What John enjoyed most was spending time with his wife, family and friends at his home in Port Aransas.

John was preceded in death by his parents. John is survived by his wife of 46 years, Jane Coker Buchek; his daughter, Laura Page and her husband, Clay; his son, John "Tres" W. Buchek, Jr., and his wife, Mills; grandchildren, Mary Louise Buchek, Darden Page, and Josephine "Josie" Page; his sister, Nancy Buchek Kuhl and her husband, Rodger; his brother, Robert "Bob" Buchek and his wife, Jenny; and numerous nieces and nephews.
