Obituary

John William Talley, Sr. passed away peacefully July 7th, 2017 in Boise, ID with his wife and family by his side. He was born to Elwood and Emily Gwendolyn Talley.

John spent his formative years in Philadelphia, PA. As an athletic standout, he participated in swimming and track and graduated from Central High School in 1958. He continued his athletic career at Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA where her received Athlete of the Year Honors while earning a B.A. in History, graduating in 1962. John later received his Master's Degree at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, AK.

After graduation, John became an officer in the US Army serving in the Royal Army Infantry Corps. He served tours of duty in both Vietnam and Korea. He retired from active duty, but continued to serve in the Army Reserves. Following his service in the military, John served in the Civil Service and a Counselor for Drug and Alcohol Abuse and finished his career as a teacher at Cornerstone Christian Schools in San Antonio, TX.

John met his first wife, Judith Lynn Johnson, on a blind date and was married May 29th, 1965. They gave birth to their daughter Lisa Beth in 1966 in Colorado Springs, CO on July 29th, and their son, John William Talley, Jr., on December 29th, 1969 in Jonesboro, AK. The family moved to Texas in 1972 where John and Lisa grew up and participated in athletics and multiple extracurricular activities. John Sr. and Jody were incredibly supportive and were highly involved in Lisa and John Jr's. activities during their youth as well as college.

John and Judy moved from Kempner back to San Antonio in 1998. While in San Antonio, John was an active member of Cornerstone Church and led a home bible study for many years. John's personal hobby included Model Railroading and was a member of The San Antonio Model Railroad Association. More recently John could be found many Saturdays at Crossroads Mall operating the model railroad display to the delight of many children who came by to admire the tremendous creative display.

John was preceded in death by Judy, his wife of 44 years, on July 5th, 2009.
It was later in 2009 at Cornerstone Church that he met the lovely Rosemary Parker where they began a friendship that eventually blossomed into love. In May 2011, they were wed at Cornerstone Church and spent the next 6 years together until his passing. Rosemary often remarked that John "was her joy".
John was a servant to all. He served his Lord Jesus Christ, in the military, his family and all of hose he came into contact with. His Children John and Lisa have said that they do not recall John Sr. ever making a decision for selfish reasons and that he put the needs of others first at all times.
John is survived by his wife Rosemary; brother Walter L. Talley; son John W. Talley, Jr.; daughter Lisa Beth Talley-Longfellow; step-sons Daniel Maine and Eric Maine; 1 grandson; 11 step-grandchildren; and 4 step-great grandchildren.

Graveside services with military honors will be Friday, July 21, 2017 at 10:00am at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, San Antonio, TX
