Life of Joseph Jefferson Faulkner

Obituary

Joseph Jefferson Faulkner was born on October 1, 1919 in Cartersville, Georgia, to John T. Faulkner and Alma Boston Faulkner.

He enlisted in the Army at the age of 20 and soon volunteered for the Army Air Corp (later to be renamed Air Force). Joe was a transport and bomber pilot and a member of the prestigious Eighth Air Force. He flew a B-24 named the Silver Streak in the second Allied wave over Normandy.

At the conclusion of the war, Joe was stationed stateside at Reese Air Force Base in Lubbock, Texas where he met the love of his life, Grace Burrows. A victim of love at first sight, Joe hastily tied the knot on January 21, 1946, while on his way to Salt Lake City. Thus, he embarked on a life-long marriage of 71 years.

The Air Force brought Joe and Grace to Europe where they traveled the continent together and experienced a life of awe and adventure.

Upon retirement from the military, the Faulkner family settled in Miami, Florida, and Joe commenced a second career with the Federal Aviation Administration as a flight inspector and accident reconstruction expert.

Joe was an avid cyclist, sometimes biking as much as 20 miles in one day. He and Grace loved playing bridge, and they seriously analyzed and strategized the daily bridge hands found in the newspaper.

One could always rely upon seeing Joe in his Lazy Boy recliner reading his Bible. This daily practice spanned decades, and his Bible was worn from the frequent turning of its pages. So much so, he resorted to duct tape as an alternative binding method. He was an active participant at Sunset Church of Christ in Miami and also a devoted church leader.

Being a colossal family man, Joe and Grace were very involved in the lives of their three children, eight grand-children and seven great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Grace Burrows Faulkner.

He is also survived by his son, Paul Faulkner and his wife, Barbara, and their children: Todd Faulkner and his wife, Kista, Kimberly Faulkner Smith and her husband, Tyson, and their children, Konnor and Peyton; Kellie Faulkner Carter and her husband, John, and their daughter, Kambrie; and Scott Faulkner and his wife, Lacey, and their son, Hayden.

He is also survived by his daughter, Terri Faulkner Higgins, and her daughter, Erin Higgins.

He is also survived by Linda Faulkner Hoffman and her husband, William K. Hoffman III, and their children: Katherine Hoffman Reyes and her husband, Fredy, and their son, Hunter; Trent Hoffman and his wife, Ashley, and their son, Lawson; and Tyler Hoffman and his wife, Rachel, and their son, Wells.

The family will receive friends at 10:00 A.M. on Monday, July 24, 2017, at Northside Church of Christ, 19818 US Hwy 281 North, San Antonio, Texas 78258.
