Obituary

Joyce Marie Rhine Manaugh was born August 13, 1933 in Lone Wolf, Oklahoma and passed away in San Antonio, TX on September 21, 2017. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jacque Manaugh; her parents Otto and Lola Rhine; her sister Mildred Rhine Spindle; and her brother Keith Rhine. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Wally and Melinda Manaugh of Dallas; son and daughter-in-law Craig and Carol Manaugh of Oklahoma City and Denver; and daughter and daughter-in-law Bren Manaugh and Blue Cochran of San Antonio; four grandchildren; nine great grandchildren, her nephew Davie Spindle and his wife Carole of Checotah, OK and their children, and her friend Mike Campos.

Joyce was a full-time mother who always said raising her children was her proudest accomplishment and her kindness, integrity, and humor were deeply appreciated by all who knew her. She grew up in western Oklahoma during the Dust Bowl and Great Depression and helped her parents raise cattle, tend the garden and chickens, and always said they never lacked for anything due to her parents' self-sufficiency. She and her brother Keith rode their horse to school and back every day, with Joyce starting first grade at age 5 because their country school would be forced to close if they weren't able to enroll another student. At age 9 she was riding her horse to drive the cows across the river to graze, tending them all day, and then driving them back home. She maintained this spirit of independence throughout her life, along with her competitiveness. A softball and basketball player in high school, she took up tennis at age 40 and quickly developed into a tough foe on the country club courts. She and Jacque grew up together in Lone Wolf, were married in 1952 and remained "high school sweethearts" until Jacque's death in 1993. Jacque's employment with Apache Oil Company took them from Tulsa to Midland in 1964 and Midland was their home until after Jacque's passing and Joyce's moving to be closer to her daughter.

An inurnment will be held in Midland at Resthaven Cemetery on October 21st at 1:00 p.m. Friends are welcome.

The family is grateful to the dedicated Encompass Hospice team for their care and support. For those wishing to make a memorial remembrance of Joyce the family suggests donations to San Antonio Pets Alive in honor of Joyce's lifelong love of animals and her beloved cat Sadie; or the American Lung Association.
