Obituary for Judy Senter

July 29, 1939 - June 13, 2017
San Antonio, Texas | Age 77

Judith (Judy) Dortch Senter went to be with her Savior and Lord on June 13, 2017. She was 77 years old. Judy was born to Caleb and Mattie Lou Dortch in Jackson, Mississippi on July 29, 1939. Judy moved to Texas to attend Baylor University where she graduated in 1960 with an education degree. Judy married her late husband of 57 years, Dick Senter, also in 1960. Dick was a Baptist minister and served as the Senior Pastor at Clariette Baptist Church (two years), First Baptist in Mabank, TX (seven years) and First Baptist Church in Allen, TX (27 years). Judy was actively involved in those churches and in her husband's pastoral ministry. Judy had the gift of teaching and she taught a multi-generational co-ed Sunday School class for many years at First Baptist in Allen. Judy was a long-time school educator spending the majority of her time as a middle school math teacher. Judy later earned her Master of Counseling degree from University of North Texas and then served as a school counselor in the Allen ISD. After retiring from the school district, Judy opened a private counseling practice where she discovered deep satisfaction in helping other people through counseling and support groups. She was a Licensed Professional Counselor.

Upon her husband's retirement in Allen and moving to San Antonio in 1998, Judy experienced such joy in being an active and involved grandmother to her four grandchildren. Her grandchildren affectionately called her JuJu. 'PaPa' and 'JuJu' attended and participated in countless events, sporting activities, and concerts for their grandchildren. JuJu enjoyed hosting 'Camp JuJu' each summer when her grandchildren were younger with a variety of activities and even Camp JuJu shirts.

Judy was bright, articulate, witty, creative, and independent. She was a life-long learner and reader. Judy completed Spiritual Direction training while in San Antonio. Judy was also passionate about journaling and led various groups on the power and therapy of journaling. She was also actively involved in leading various 12-step support groups. Judy was especially drawn to women who needed help and were struggling. In her later years, Judy volunteered with the Haven for Hope Women's Residential Addiction Recovery Group.

Judy was a charter member of The Springs Baptist Church in San Antonio. She was currently an active member of the Coker United Methodist Church family.

Judy was preceded in death by her parents and by her husband, Dick Senter, who recently passed away in April 2017. Judy is survived by daughter, Susan Senter of Plano, TX; son, Scott Senter, and wife, Lori, of San Antonio and her four grandkids that she was so proud of – Grant, Lee, Madeline, and Jackson Senter. She is also survived by brother Caleb Dortch and wife, Jean, of Atlanta, Ga and brother Richard Dortch and wife, Joyce, of Jackson, MS. Other family members include niece Shannon Dortch and nephews Richard Dortch, Jr., Patrick Dortch, and Andrew Dortch.
