Obituary

The Reverend Katherine Grace Riggs, 92, died peacefully at her home on September 22, 2017.
She was predeceased by her husband Richard with whom she shared 60 years of marriage and by her son John and daughter-in-law Barbara Riggs.

Born in Oak Park, IL on January 20, 1925, the only child of Frances and John Grace, she graduated from Vassar College and in 1947 married Dick Riggs after they both completed their Master's in Geology from Columbia University. They settled and raised their family in Oklahoma City and later moved to San Antonio in 1972.

Katy was a loving wife, a warm and wonderful mother, and an energetic leader in her community volunteering her time and talent to many organizations and projects. She enjoyed music, dancing, tennis and especially sailing with her husband and family. They raced boats on Canyon Lake and for many years happily cruised their sailboat in the Caribbean.

In 1981, Katy graduated from the Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest and devoted the rest of her life to parish ministry. A pioneering priest, she was the first woman to be ordained a deacon and then a priest in the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas. She served as an assistant Rector at St. David's, the vicar of St. Francis-by-the-Lake, and as a supply priest in Lockhart, Beeville and other parishes around the diocese. She was also the first female chaplain of the Daughters of the King and worked for years ministering to prison inmates through the Kairos Ministry. In 2001 she was honored with the Hal Brook Perry Award from Seminary of the Southwest.

Katy leaves her daughter, Elizabeth (Riggs) Fermano and husband Paul of Marblehead, MA, son Richard Jr. of McQueeney, TX, grandson CDR John T. with the United States Navy in Germany, granddaughters Heather (Riggs) Carlson and husband Jon of Ft. Lauderdale, FL and Katie Riggs of McQueeney, TX, and three great-grandchildren, Riggs and Kaelyn Carlson of Ft. Lauderdale and Rylee Riggs of McQueeney.

Funeral service will be at 1:00 pm, on Tuesday, October 3rd at St. David's Episcopal Church, 1300 Wiltshire Blvd., San Antonio. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. David's Episcopal Church, the Episcopal Seminary of the Southwest in Austin, or the Kairos Ministry in care of the Diocese of West Texas.
