Obituary

KENNY RAY STRICKLAND
September 1, 1932 – March 8, 2018

Kenny Ray Strickland, age 85, changed his address to his Mansion in Heaven on Thursday, March 8, 2018 in San Antonio, Texas. He was born on 1 September 1932, to McKinley and Viletter Strickland in Rowland N.C. He grew up on the family farm, joining the military to help his family with making ends meet. He served three years in the United States Navy, then 17 years in the United States Air Force. He met his life's love, Cherry Lou, in 1958 and they married in 1960. After faithfully serving for 20 years, he retired in 1972 to return to his family's farm in Rowland NC where he worked the family farm and owned his own logging business.

After 20 years of hauling timber, it was time to retire again and he decided it was time to make good on a promise he had made to Lou, to move her back home to Texas. They moved to Converse, TX in 1993 to fulfill that promise, and to be close to their grandchildren. After he lost his beloved Lou in 2009, he lived a very independent life going daily to the lawnmower shop to just visit his friends and regular visits to Wal-Mart to get a cone of ice cream and ride the cart, passing out cash to anyone who looked like they might need some folding money. His joys later in life were family dinners, gardening, working on lawnmowers and holding down the couch with his two fur babies, Trixie and Coco.

He was a faithful member at the Randolph AFB Chapel for 24 years and an active member in the Protestant Men of the Chapel (PMOC) organization. He enjoyed every get together and annual retreat with the PMOC, men whom he lovingly called his 'friends.'

He was preceded in death by his bride, Cherry Lou Strickland; his parents, McKinley and Viletter Strickland; his sisters, Edith, Annie Ruth, Berlene, Perlene, and Alma; and brothers, Molan, Nathan and Paul (aka Cookie); Kenny is survived by two daughters, Tracy (Al) King and Tresa Strickland, both of Schertz, TX and; one son, Kevin Strickland of the home; He is also survived by 4 sisters, Lillie Jane (Joe) Kalie, of Columbia, SC, Dottie (Jerry) Locklear and Mary Helen Royal, both of Norfolk, VA and Caffie Little of Fayetteville, NC; two brothers, Reggle (Edith) Strickland, of Pembroke NC and Homer Strickland of Rowland, NC. Kenny is also survived by seven grandchildren and host of nieces, nephews and friends who loved him dearly.

The family would like to acknowledge the nurses of 3 East and 3 South along with the team of doctors, (especially the Internal Medicine and Cardiothoracic Surgery Staffs) at San Antonio Military Medical Center, that cared for our father with great passion and caring hearts. We are forever grateful that God put you in our dad's path. We hope that you will carry him and his 'jokes' with you always.

The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00PM with time to share memories beginning at 7:00PM, Thursday, April 5, 2018 at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
