Obituary

Laura Evangeline Rodriguez Carter was born on April 23, 1981, in Houston, Texas, in Hermann Hospital, by the park, where her mother worked as a Labor and Delivery nurse. She was the firstborn for J'Ann and Jim who was then only days away from completing his B.S. at the University of Houston.

Laura was taken from us in a tragic homicide on January 11, 2015. We know Laura left this earth relaxed, as she had both hands in her pockets. Laura is remembered most for her bright light and her infectious laughter. This and her open heart are what made Laura so special to so many people.

Laura progressed from babe in arms to baby in pack, to baby in stroller and finally to girl on her own two feet in Houston in the Heights. At age two she and her parents moved to Fayetteville, Arkansas.the Austin of Arkansas.in the beautiful Ozark Mountains. Unbeknownst to her parents the family of seemingly three leaving Houston would the next year become a family of four, as her spritely sister Hannah was born the next year. These Texans could stay away only so long, so in 1984 they returned to Texas to live in San Antonio where they have lived ever since.

Laura started her education at the New Age School, now the Circle School. She progressed through Agnes Cotton Elementary where she was the winner of the science fair, Alamo Heights Junior School, where to the delight of her parents she was recognized as an avid reader and Alamo Heights High School where she graduated in 1999. In her youth she lead her family to membership in Alamo Heights Presbyterian Church where she was baptized and was mentored by a remarkable young woman and youth leader Deborah Dickenson. She attended summer camp at Loma Linda at MO Ranch on the Guadalupe River. Laura was a graduate of Texas State University with a degree in Communications and membership in that college's honor society. After tracing her lineage to Francis Menefee White, who came to Texas from Tennessee, and his daughter Margaret Laura White, one of the original Daughters of the Republic of Texas, she and her sister and mother became members of the D.R.T. She was a student in the Masters program for counseling at UTSA and was to begin her next semester January 12. Her fellow students and professors, who were apparently familiar with her being late to class, eventually learned what that lateness really meant, and on January 15, the whole department lovingly held a candlelight vigil for her. The light they created and shared in her honor was so uplifting to her family in these dark days. They will be eternally grateful for that gift.

For years Laura resided in Southtown where she was frequently seen riding her bicycle along the San Antonio River with her best companion Juanie, who had been dubbed El Rey of Southtown. He happily rode in the big basket in front. Juanie, a chihuahua from Austin's Small Chance Rescue was Juan in a Million. Blessedly so, he is not left alone, but is now with his best friend Ben.

Laura is survived by her parents James Carter and J'Ann Rodriguez-Carter, her sister Hannah E. R. Carter, her future brother-in-law Aaron Forman, her grandmother Elizabeth Carter, uncle James Jay Rodriguez and Auntie Victoria Shackelford. She is also survived by many many loving cousins, some who just had a We Cousins Gathering to join together and celebrate all the cousins on some of the branches of our family tree. She is also survived by many friends and mentors who became part of this family and forever will remain.

She is preceded in death by her grandparents James E. Carter, Sr. of Carrollton, Texas, and James J. Rodriguez and Winifred G. Rodriguez of Port Arthur, Texas.

We Invite everyone who knew and loved Laura Evangeline to celebrate her time on this earth with us at a memorial service at Porter Loring Mortuary, McCullough location, on Saturday 24 January, 2015 at 1:00pm.
