Obituary for Loretta Marie (Janda) Koehn Valenta

October 20, 1943 - August 14, 2020
San Antonio, Texas | Age 76

Loretta Marie (Janda) Koehn Valenta, 76, passed away on Friday, August 14, 2020 in San Antonio, Texas after a short, but difficult battle with ALS. Loretta was born on October 20, 1943 in La Grange, Texas to Richard Benedict Janda and Martha Annie Rainosek. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Deacon George Valenta; and brother, Donald Janda. Loretta grew up in Austin, Texas where she graduated from St. Mary's High School and later earned a bachelor's degree from the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio. She was blessed with 3 children, Patrick, Anne and Michael from her first marriage, and added four more sons, George Jr., Kevin, Doug, and Matt to her family after her marriage to George Valenta.

Loretta was a wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend to countless people across the globe. Her xeriscaping efforts resulted in her homestead being recognized as a Certified Wildlife Habitat. Loretta was proud of her Czechoslovakian heritage. She collected Czech pottery and was an active member of the Czech Heritage Society in San Antonio. Loretta enjoyed quilting so much that she was a member of two quilting groups in San Antonio. Many will remember Loretta for the quilts she made for family, friends and communities in need as well as the Christmas stockings she made and donated to our military troops overseas. All of her family and friends will continue to savor the family recipes she recorded, perfected, and passed on to her (and others') children. The lucky few will remember her as Grandma, with her ready lap for snuggling and lush backyard for exploring. All, however, will remember her smile, her warmth, and her generosity. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Loretta is survived by her son, Dr. Patrick Koehn; daughter, Anne Koehn; son, Michael Koehn; brother, Dick Janda; sister, Delores Gililland; and sister, Diane Janda. She is also survived by her stepsons, Dr. George Valenta, Jr., Kevin Valenta, Dr. Douglas Valenta and Matthew Valenta. She is survived by nine grandchildren.
