Obituary

Louise Perkins Miller, 95, of San Antonio, Texas, passed away peacefully on to eternity on April 9, 2018, with family members at her side.

Born on March 3, 1923, in Sulligent, AL to Mamie and Raymond Perkins, she was the second of five children. She was raised in Alabama and Mississippi, and graduated high school at New Brockton, AL. She was a beautiful southern belle, with a charming southern accent to match. While working at Fort Rucker, AL, during WW II, she met the love of her life, Captain (Dr.) Sidney Miller, of Brooklyn, N.Y. They married at war's end, and began family life in New York, where Sidney resumed his private practice of dentistry.

Louise loved, missed, and longed for the South, and they decided in the late 1950's to move to Alabama, at which time Sidney began on a career path of public health and academia. Several moves later found them settling in San Antonio in 1971, recruited by the newly forming UTSA Dental School. Louise became very active in the Dental Auxiliary, serving as President. She founded Victoria Courts Child Auxiliary, serving as President, and devoted much time to help benefit children. She became active in various political campaigns, was an avid reader, and loved writing poetry, with some of her works being published.

Louise was a member of Trinity Baptist Church. She and her husband enjoyed golfing for many years, and she continued playing several times weekly until she was 90. She loved nature, gardening, and being outdoors. Louise loved singing and playing her guitar, greatly entertaining friends and family. She loved all genres of music and would not hesitate to take the opportunity to dance. She was warm, outgoing, charismatic, and always found a common thread with whomever she met. Louise was the life of the party.

She will be remembered for many wonderful attributes, but no one can ever forget her infectious and dazzling smile that would light up a room. She will be greatly missed.

But her greatest passion was her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Whether known as Mother or Mama, Grandma, Nana, Weese, or the Grand Weese, she devoted countless hours to their education and development, instilling in them her own values of perseverance, loyalty, knowledge, and hard work. It is through them her legacy will continue.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Sidney Miller, son George Miller, her brothers Paul Perkins and Charles Perkins, and sister Jewel Perkins Lee. She is survived by daughter Luci Miller Pitman (Ben) of San Antonio, son Howard G. Miller (Patty) of Huntsville, AL, seven grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren (with one more on the way,) as well as her sister, Laverne Perkins Ewer (David), of Buzzard's Bay, MA, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to express their appreciation and thanks to the nurses and staff of Incarnate Word Assisted Living Facility and The Enclave Rehabilitation Facility for their friendship, compassion, and excellent care provided for Louise over the past two years.

A celebration of life will be held in the Chapel of Porter Loring Mortuary (1101 McCullough) at 4 p.m. on Friday, April 13, with interment to be held in Gadsden, AL, at a later date.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, that donations be made to a charity of choice.
