Obituary for Ms. Lucia Ruiz Serna

March 12, 1949 - January 16, 2018
San Antonio, Texas | Age 68

March 12, 1949 – January 16, 2018

On January 16, 2018, Lucia "Luz" Ruiz Serna, surrounded by love, did what she was born to do and taught her final lesson on this earth to those in attendance. Lucia was blessed in abundance with the gifts of love, courage, strength, intelligence, ingenuity and fortitude. She waited patiently in her last days for union with her Creator. Lucia was passionate about life. As an educator in San Antonio for over thirty years, her accomplishments are many. Her point of focus was as a teacher at Sarah King Elementary here in San Antonio, TX. She loved her work and gave freely of herself to her beloved students and peers. Lucia was always ready to be of service to those around her. She was an accomplished writer and was active in many projects both locally and nationally where she shared her work with many, she inspired and was inspired by her participation. Being a facilitator for the New Jersey Writing Project was near and dear to her as it revolved around teaching children the experience about being a writer. The published anthologies, "Las Mujeres Grandes" volumes one and two were another meaningful writing experience for her as it involved a collaboration with other female writers. These were two of many such projects that fulfilled her. In her retirement Lucia was a Tai Chi practitioner and teacher. Time with her beloved "SKIRTS", Sarah King Incredible Retired Teacher's Society and luncheons with the "Lakers", peers from her days as a student at Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio were essential to her. She was fulfilled. When cancer came for her, she faced it with a typical Lucia response, head on and full steam ahead. She fought whole heartedly and courageously for six years. In November of 2017, she made the decision on her own terms to end the battle, so she was the Victor. With the support of loved ones, and an incredible medical team, to which her family will always give thanks for, she spent her last weeks in celebration with beloved friends and was cared for by her family. From the time she created her own peaceful world among the fruit orchards, tomato and potato fields in the northern US, that were her childhood, to the cotton, wheat and corn fields here in the south to blazing her own path to our Lady of the Lake in San Antonio all the way from a small Texas town, from riding a motorcycle across the US, to inspiring thousands of children to live their dreams, Lucia leaves us her legacy to have faith, to celebrate life, to live in integrity and to be who we truly are. The lessons continue.
Lucia was preceded in departure from this world by her siblings, Guillermo "Willie" Serna, Jr., Mary Ann Hernandez and Gabriel Paul Serna. She is survived by: her loving niece, whom she raised as her daughter, Irene Maria Serna of San Antonio; her loving parents Marcelina Ruiz Serna and Guillermo Cardenas Serna of San Angelo, TX; sister, Alice Serna-McDougald and sister-in-law, Lisa E. McDougald of Houston, TX.; brothers, Steve L. Serna of Austin, TX, John D. Serna and sister, Sara G Serna of San Angelo and sister-in-law, Jayne Serna of Austin, TX.
