Obituary

Marc M. McClelland, Brigadier General, USAF (Retired), died Sunday, March 4, 2018 at the age of 82. General McClelland was born in Newark, New Jersey. He attended public schools in New Jersey, Massachusetts, and then Brown University in Rhode Island before entering the US Air Force in 1954.

Marc was commissioned through the Aviation Cadet Program in January 1956, when he graduated from Pilot Training at Williams Air Force Base, Arizona. He went on to become a fighter pilot flying numerous aircraft. In 1966, Marc left the Air Force to join United Air Lines, but soon decided he preferred military life and was back in his Air Force uniform.

Throughout his 33-year career, his first love was always flying. He was a Command Pilot with nearly 10,000 hours of flying time in a broad assortment of military aircraft; including the F-86, EC-121, F-102, F-106, C-141, A-37, and C-130. A veteran of the Viet Nam war, he commanded several squadrons and wings in both Tactical Air Command and Military Airlift Command. He ended his career in 1987 as Vice Commander of 4th Air Force.

In 1980, while stationed at Kelly AFB, Marc met Celia. They married in 1983 and transferred to McClellan AFB, where they spent the last four years of his career. Upon Marc's retirement, they returned to D'Hanis, Texas to try ranching. The spring floods of 1987 ended that dream and later that Fall they moved to Dallas to follow Celia's career. Marc always said that in retirement he missed flying and the camaraderie of the military. In September 2004 Marc and Celia moved to Air Force Village II. They both fell in love with the Village life style and found the camaraderie they had missed so. Marc said that it was like being back in a fighter squadron except for the lack of airplanes. He will be truly missed by all that loved him.

He is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Celia; half-sister Terri Rouvell, half-brother Donald McClelland, Jr.; three sons, Gary McClelland (spouse Hilary), Scott McClelland, and Kevin McClelland; five granddaughters; three grandsons; and eight great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents: mother Marjorie McClelland and adoptive father Donald McClelland,; biological father Edward DeHart; half-brother Edward DeHart, Jr.; son Ted McClelland; and step-sister Barbara White.
