Obituary for Margaret Kenney Hopkins

November 19, 1928 - May 4, 2018
San Antonio, Texas | Age 89

November 19, 1928 – May 4, 2018

Our much loved mother, Margaret Kenney Hopkins, age 89, passed away on Friday, May 4, 2018 in San Antonio. She was born in San Antonio to Dr. Nat Mitchell and Mary Patterson Kenney, the fifth of six lively, independent, talented, and strong-minded children.

She was an avid fisherman during summers at Rockport on the Gulf of Mexico from an early age, who earned the nickname "Old Salt" from her brother's friends for her love of the sea. As such, at the age of 2, she spied her family driving away in a boat, escaped her nurse, ran out of the house and down the pier, jumped off the end to catch them, and was only saved because her brother turned around to look. She had an equal love of roaming the Hill Country, where she hunted and rode the family donkeys. She tried hard to pass her interests on to her children through many trips to the beach, attempts to make us fish and learn to shoot, and horseback rides.

After graduating from Thomas Jefferson High School, where she mastered the art of twirling a lasso in unison while marching as one of the famed "Lassos," she graduated magna cum laude from Trinity University in San Antonio, where she double-majored in philosophy and religion, and went on to graduate studies at the Perkins School of Theology, her lifelong passion (aside from politics), at Southern Methodist University in Dallas.

Once married and three kids in, the family moved from San Antonio to Orange County in Southern California, where she had a fourth child, created a home where the neighborhood kids were always welcome, and then moved for the sake of cleaner air to northern California, where she and her husband leveled off the top of a hill, carved a road to get there and built a house. After about 16 years in California, her husband's career switch shuttled her to Clearwater, Florida for 18 years. When he retired 20 years ago, they moved onto the family ranch near Boerne. She had a great skill for carpentry, which she shared with her brother William, and will be remembered for her enviable tool set (which she took on her honeymoon) and her constant building projects. Another strong interest was Bible Study Fellowship, in which she was involved for many years. She was a serene, kind, and optimistic woman who loved nothing more than to spend time with her family, and the friends she made were lifelong connections. We were enormously fortunate to have had such a gentle, strong, loving, and giving person in our lives and will miss her endlessly.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Celwyn Emerson Hopkins; her son, Celwyn Emerson Hopkins, Jr.; her parents, Dr. Nat Mitchell and Mary Patterson Kenney; her sister, Mary Patterson "Patsy" Goad; and her brother, Nat Mitchell Kenney.

Margaret is survived by her daughters, Mary Elizabeth Hopkins, Helen Natalie Hopkins Mell, and Ann Hopkins Johnston and her husband Jimmie C. Johnston; her beloved grandchildren, Michael John Adams, Amanda Elizabeth Mell, Anna Mary-Elizabeth Adams, Natalie Rose Mell, and Emma Katherine Mell; brothers, Dr. John Wesley Kenney, William Patterson Kenney, and her nephew raised like a brother, John Graham Griffith; sister, Elizabeth Kenney; and her nieces, nephews, and cousins.
