Obituary

Maria del Carmen Villa Hernandez de Jones passed away peacefully at her home on December 29, 2017. She was born February 19, 1926 in Eagle Pass, Texas to Isidro Villa Frías and Celia Hernandez Galindo. At the age of 16 she left Eagle Pass and moved to San Antonio where she enrolled in Durham Business School. She completed her education there and used her skills to advance to level GS14 with the United States federal civil service.

She met Jerry Ray Jones in San Antonio where he was an Air Force recruit. They married in Washington D.C. in 1948. Their first child, Wayne Edward was born in 1949. After leaving Washington D.C. they lived in Louisville KY, Charlotte, NC, and Wichita Falls, TX. In 1954 Jerry was transferred to Kelly Air Force Base as part of the Military Air Command unit. Their second child, Carole Ann was born that year. Maria began working as a Budget Analyst at Brooks Air Force Base and remained there, except for a short deployment to Bermuda in 1960. She was at Brooks at the height of the space age when it became the hub for Aerospace Medicine. During this time, they purchased a second house on the Guadalupe River just below the area where the Canyon Reservoir was later constructed. They lived there for a year, and she and Jerry commuted to San Antonio, while the children attended school in New Braunfels. She and Jerry loved to party, especially dancing at the Wagon Wheel.

She and Jerry divorced in 1965, and she continued her career at Brooks until her retirement in 1985. She moved from her home on West Mayfield to Castle Hills where she purchased a condominium and served as a financial officer in the Home Owner's Association. In retirement she finally had time to become more active in Beta Sigma Phi, eventually serving in every office of her local chapter as well as some citywide offices. She enjoyed traveling with her sorority sisters and went on several cruises.

In 2005 at age 79 she agreed to move to Eastland County with her son and daughter-in-law. There she exchanged the hustle and bustle of city life for the serenity of open spaces and life on a ranch. She quickly adapted to small town life and made many new friends. She served on the Board of Directors of the local Housing Authority. On the ranch she kept a close watch on the livestock, especially during goat kidding season and actually purchased a pair of blue jeans. She maintained a separate household and was often seen driving her red car downtown, even up to the week before her passing on December 29, 2017.

She was preceded in death by a grandson, Trever Gower of San Antonio; brothers, Ignacio Rea of Miami, AZ, Jose Ignacio Villa of Oregon; sisters, Oralia Villa of Eagle Pass, Ramona Rea of Miami, AZ, Beatrice Gonzalez and Emilia Martinez of San Antonio, and Amalia Perez Rea Villa of Eagle Pass. She is survived by her son, Wayne Edward and his wife, Gwen Eberhart of Rising Star; daughter, Carole Ann Jones of San Antonio, brothers, Isidro Villa and wife, Rose of Waukesha, WI, Santiago Villa of San Antonio, Rogelio Villa and partner, Joyce Blesi of Coon Rapids, MN; sisters, Celia Villa of Grand Prairie, Evelyn Hayden and husband, Pat of Fort Worth; 6 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; 1 great-great granddaughter; 15 nieces and nephews; and 10 great nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, January 4, 2018, at Porter Loring Mortuary.
