Obituary for Mr. Mark Joseph Millender

April 13, 1957 - September 3, 2018
San Antonio, Texas | Age 61

On September 3, 2018, Mark Joseph Millender passed away peacefully at the age of 61. At the time of his passing, he was attended by his three children in Galveston, where he suffered from a sudden, fatal bout of pancreatitis.

Mark, or "Nandy," as he was called by his three grandchildren, was a loving father, husband, grandfather, uncle and son. He was born on April 13, 1957 in Houston, Texas and attended Robert E. Lee High School before marrying the love of his life Dana Maroney in October of 1974. After earning his GED and working several dozen menial jobs, he went on to become the vice president of Ag-Horn Coffee and Vending before moving on to a successful career in real estate for Bradford Properties.

Mark helped innumerable people reach the goal of sobriety through his work with Alcoholics Anonymous and Haven for Hope. He was a virtuoso guitarist, avid historian and proud father.

He truly lived his life in the service of others. By dint of his generosity, his extraordinary empathy and unflinching regard for the well-being of his fellow man, he brought joy and meaningful assistance with his time, his unique humor and his ever-present smile. He sacrificed everything he could at every opportunity to make a better life for his wife, his children and his grandchildren. He died doing what he loved: sharing his time with the people he most cherished in a place that holds great historical significance for our family.

He is preceded in death by Dana, his wife of 39 years and his daughter Elyse Michelle Millender. He is survived by his parents Jack and Mary Jane; his children Shawn and his wife Erika, Erin Mills and her husband Nathan, and Sarah and her fiancé Casey Hannam; his three grandchildren who were the light of his life: Fiona, Ethan and Eli plus one on the way; his brothers; Paul Millender, Kirk Millender and his wife Suzanne; his nieces Paula, Jennifer, Lindy and Jaclyn; and his nephew Garrison.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Sunday, September 9, 2018 at Porter Loring Mortuary North.

11:00 AM

Pastor Robert L. Barton will officiate. Interment will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery.
