Obituary

Martha J. James, age 78 of San Antonio, passed away on Friday, November 16, 2018. She was born in Pineville, Louisiana to parents Mary Ella and L.J. Parker. Martha was a proud and dedicated family matriarch who balanced running all household affairs, successfully raising children and grandchildren all while running a fruitful childcare business for over 35 years. Her passion for the importance of education spanned generations and drove the success of not only her family, but also the many children in her care throughout the years.

She had a giving heart that always sought to encourage, support, comfort and embrace those around her. Her sacrifices for family and friends were enormous as she always strived to improve the lives of those around her. Those sacrifices will never be forgotten. She enjoyed regular conversations with family and friends, near and far, and never forgot a birthday or special occasion.

Martha was also a tremendous cook who especially liked preparing some of her family favorites from Louisiana for large family gatherings. She was the catalyst behind countless family events and holiday traditions that continue to this day. Although she was many things to many people, she was happiest of all when she was with her loving husband and surrounded by her closest family.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Ella Miles; daughters Mary Francis and Karitha Payne; and brothers, Jimmy Lee Miles and John Miles.

She is survived by her husband Edward James; daughter, Mary Anne Parker-Trayers (Bob); grandchildren, Dion Phoenix (Randy), Nato James, Nathan James; great-grandchildren, Kamryn Phoenix, Jayden Phoenix; brothers, Thomas Miles (Marilyn), Willie Miles; sisters, Dorothy Simmons, Gloria Abell (Joe), Gladys Smith (Larry), Sharon Jackson (Aaron).

The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, November 30th at Porter Loring Mortuary, North, 2102 N Loop 1604 East.
