Obituary

Mary Elaine Karam died at peace on November 24, 2018, surrounded by her family. Lanie, as she was known to those who loved her, was admired for her kindness, sharp intelligence and her dedication to her community. She was an inspiration for pursuing her many interests with enthusiasm.

A lifetime resident of San Antonio, Lanie attended Providence High School and received her BA in mathematics from Our Lady of the Lake University and a Master's degree in mathematics from St. Mary's University. She was a consultant at Region 20 before she began her IT career at Tesoro Petroleum as a Systems Analyst.

Lanie was exceptional at mastering artistic endeavors and even new careers. She was a graceful dancer who studied ballet but she was also well known for belly dancing as a tribute to her Lebanese heritage. For many years, she performed in a bright yellow costume on the main stage at the Texas Folklife Festival. Her passion for singing was equally diverse. She was a member of the choirs at St. George Maronite Catholic Church and at Little Flower Basilica and performed in the chorus of the San Antonio Opera in multiple productions. After earning an Associate degree in Radio and TV, she managed to parlay a job that combined both of her passions – her devotion to religion and broadcast journalism. She served as anchor at Catholic Television of San Antonio and hosted her regular series of "Day to Day with Lanie Karam".

Lanie's commitment to projects extended to her many leadership roles. Most notably, she served from 2011 until 2016 as the secretary of the Southern Federation of Syrian Lebanese American Clubs. In 2012, the Southern Federation awarded Lanie "Woman of the Year" and she also received both the President's and Chairman's Choice Awards. She served as President of the Bey Aleph Sorority and was a member of the St. George Maronite Ladies Altar Society.

Lanie was preceded in death by her father, Edward Karam, Sr.; her mother, Josephine "Jay" Karam; her sister, Genevieve Niemeyer; and her brothers-in-law, Phillip Niemeyer and Robert Karam. She is survived by her brother, Edward Karam, Jr.; her sisters, Dr. Patricia Karam and Edwina Saba, and her husband, John Saba. She was a beloved aunt to her niece, nephews and their children.

All services will be at St. George Maronite Catholic Church, 6070 Babcock Road. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 28, 2018, at 6:00 p.m., and Rosary at 7:00 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, November 29, 2018, followed by burial at Mission Park Dominion.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Southern Federation Foundation, Inc. for a scholarship in memory of Lanie Karam, c/o Margaret Estefan, 6846 Country View, San Antonio, TX 78240.
