Obituary

Mary Rubio Gutierrez, age 82, passed away on Thursday, October 5, 2017, in San Antonio, TX.

She was born on April 9, 1935, in Martindale, TX to Julio Rubio and Catalina Espinoza.

Mary was a loving and nurturing mother of three, as well as a devoted grandmother of three, all of whom brought amazing joy to her life. She played an active role in her children's education and activities. She was an active member of the Loma Park Elementary PTA. Mary then went to serve in SAISD, where she retired after 20 years of service, to care for her husband Frank after his health began to decline.

Mary was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church for over 50 years, where she taught CCD and later joined the St. Vincent de Paul Society. She loved spending time with her family, whether it was on vacation or at family gatherings. Mary was always the life of the party. She loved gardening in her spare time, and shopping with Jennifer McKinney, who was the only one that could keep up with her. Mary also enjoyed her lunch dates and shopping with her best friend of 60+ years, Helen Castillo.

Mary touched the hearts of everyone she encountered. She had a beautiful smile and infectious laugh that will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Julio and Catalina Rubio; loving husband, Frank G. Gutierrez, Jr.; son, Richard Gutierrez; and granddaughter, Katherine Marie Mercado.

Mary is survived by her daughters, Teresa Mercado, husband Ted, Pat Gutierrez; two grandchildren, Elizabeth Cardenas, husband Max III, and Victoria Mercado; sister, Pauline Yanes, husband Joe; brother in law, David Gutierrez, and wife Ana Maria, numerous cousins; as well as being Tia Mary to numerous nieces and nephews, and was also known as Aunt Mary to her extended family and friends.
