Obituary for Michael David Maroney

August 6, 1949 - September 8, 2017
San Antonio, Texas | Age 68

Michael David Maroney was born on August 6, 1949 in Del Rio, TX to Irvin and Marilyn Maroney. He grew up in San Antonio and graduated from Robert E. Lee High School. Mike proudly served in the Air National Guard. On September 19, 1970 Mike married his sweetheart, Margie Lee Wurzbach and they began a 47-year partnership of unconditional love and endless adventures. Their love blossomed into a family with the birth of daughter Amber in 1973 and son Jason in 1975.

Mike worked for USAA in various capacities for 37 years. His true passion was serving the Lord with his time and talents. Mike served at Concordia as Director of Athletic Ministry and coached softball and basketball for over 20 years. He taught 7th grade Sunday School, served in Men's Ministry, and was a church elder. His devoted leadership and the example he set touched many lives.

Family was everything to Mike and his joy was in his four grandchildren who called him "Pots". He believed in them, encouraged their dreams, and made them a priority in his life. Mike enjoyed watching and playing sports, listening to music, working in the yard, and going to the beach. He was an avid reader, trivia buff, and a card shark. He began a ministry called Broken Free, in which he made mosaic crosses that now hang in hundreds of homes and churches reminding people of Jesus' sacrifice for our brokenness and the promise of His healing grace.

Mike left this earth to be united with his Savior on September 8, 2017 after a 3-year battle with kidney cancer. The example Mike set throughout his life of what it means to be a man of God will forever influence the lives of his family, friends, and all who knew him.

Mike is survived by his wife, Margie; daughter Amber and her husband Justin, son Jason and his wife Alicia; his grandchildren Malin, Nathanael, Clara, and Camryn; his sister Diana and brother Pat.

A Celebration Service will be held on Friday, September 15, at Concordia Lutheran Church, 16801 Huebner Rd., San Antonio, TX 78258.

Visitation with family will begin at 11 with the service at 12 noon, followed by a reception at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to make a donation in Mike's honor to the Middle School ministry where he served at Concordia Lutheran Church.
