Obituary

MAJ Michael S. L. Franz, 36, passed away peacefully on September 12, 2014, at his home in San Antonio, TX with his family holding him after a long, hard, nearly two year fight with synovial sarcoma.

He was born on February 4, 1978 in Landstuhl Germany. Mike graduated from Buena High School in Sierra Vista, AZ in 1996 where he excelled in soccer, cross country and track. He graduated from the University of Arizona Nursing School with Honors in 2000.

He married Adriana Markham, his devoted and lovely wife on May 28, 2000. Their Army career included Ft. Lewis, WA where Mike was trained as an operating room nurse. Other locations included Landstuhl Germany, Ft. Huachuca, AZ, where Mike was a company commander at Raymond W. Bliss Health center. He continued with time in Ft. Sam Houston, Ft. Bragg, NC and Ft. Riley, KS. While in Kansas, he was the perioperative chief which was one of his favorite jobs.

Their final duty station sent them to the prestigious Army Baylor program at Ft. Sam Houston where Michael received a Masters in Hospital Administration. He managed to complete his studies through several surgeries, radiation and chemotherapy treatments, graduating in December 2013 as the class Honor Graduate.

Mike continued to work and contribute to the Nurse Corp until the very end. Mike's first tour of duty to Operation Iraqi Freedom found him assigned to a Forward Surgical Treatment team with the 101st Airborne Division as a part of the invasion force into Iraq. They provided the first care at Baghdad International Airport, with time in Mosul, Kirkuk, and Fallujah. His second tour was in Basra, Iraq.

His military honors include a Combat Medic Badge, Airborne Jump Wings, Meritorious service medals, and Army Commendation medals. He will be awarded a Legion of Merit posthumously during the funeral service. Recently the Army Baylor program honored Mike by naming the Alumni Award after Mike, an honor he received a year before.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Marvin Meyer; and his grandmother, Marjorie Heilshorn.
