Obituary for Mrs. Miriam Ruth Johnson

September 16, 1936 - March 23, 2018
San Antonio, Texas | Age 81

September 16, 1936 - March 23, 2018

Miriam Ruth Johnson, age 81, passed away on Friday, March 23, 2018 at Methodist TexSan Hospital in San Antonio, Texas.

Miriam was born in Parkers Prairie, Minnesota in 1936. Miriam had a tough start to life, living on a farm outside a small town in north central Minnesota. There she endured cold Minnesota winters in a house without indoor plumbing. She lost her mother when she was only 13 and became "chief cook and bottle washer" as she often said. Just like now, she had the strong support of family, especially her older brother Duane. After high school, she left Parkers Prairie to attend college at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois where she met the love of her life, Kent Johnson. While there, she pursued her interests in education and music, and after graduation, she married Kent, and they moved to Madison, Wisconsin. Once in Madison, she worked as an educator supporting Kent while he pursued his masters and PhD in Geophysics.

Kent had envisioned a career as a college professor in the Midwest, however, the draw and opportunity to work and live in beautiful southern California was too strong, and together they set off for the West to start a career and family. There they met wonderful friends living in a number of different locations and gave birth to their two sons, Scott and Mark, in Bakersfield, California. Kent's career took them all over California, oversees to the Netherlands and a couple stops in Texas. Together they took a lot of pleasure from experiencing new places and making new friends. She was always strong in her faith and a supportive, loving wife and mother. They were both able to see their sons and marry exceptional women and get to know and enjoy their five grandsons. Miriam's great passions were her family, music, faith and friends. She was involved in the Abiding Presence Lutheran Church choir and music program, and she was actively involved with the Philanthropic Educational Organization Sisterhood, doing charitable work, and with the San Antonio Petroleum Auxiliary.

She is survived by her two sons, Scott Johnson and his wife Bea of Mill Valley, California and Mark Johnson and his wife Dawn of San Antonio; her 5 grandsons, Ben, Max, Sam, Leo and Will; her brother Duane Johnson and wife Marian, and brother-in-law Mel Grefe; her sister-in-law Barb Kretsch and brother-in-law Fred Kretsch and wife Carol; her family friend Greg Payne (like a son) and wife Diane; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, it was Miriam's wish that donations be made to Abiding Presence Lutheran Church of San Antonio at or to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network at, to fight pancreatic cancer in honor of her late husband, Kent Johnson.
