Obituary

Mitchell Frederic Nielsen, age 87, died of Alzheimer's Disease on September 6, 2017 in San Antonio, Texas.

Mitch was born to Victor and Hazel Nielsen in Omaha, Nebraska on March 17, 1930. He graduated from Central High School in Sioux City, Iowa. Mitch attended Morningside College and then Wayne State College where he also played football. He was inducted into the Wayne State College "Athletic Hall of Fame" as a member of the only undefeated 1949 football team. Mitch then transferred to the University of South Dakota to study geology and also run hurdles in track.

During the Korean War, he was drafted into the United States Army, where he served in the Intelligence mapping division in Germany. After the war, he and Janice were married on June 26, 1955. He attended the University of Nebraska and received his Master's in Geology. Mitch and Jan lived in Venezuela for eight years, where Mitch was employed by Creole Petroleum as a petroleum geologist. They were then transferred to New Orleans where Mitch worked for Exxon. His final move with Exxon was to Kingsville, Texas in 1972, where he and Jan have lived for the past 44 years.

Mitch was a member of the First United Methodist Church where he served in several capacities. He was a longtime member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. Mitch also spent many hours volunteering and attending his children and grandchildren's activities.

Mitch enjoyed vacationing in the mountains, playing golf, raising emus, participating in all types of sports, baking biscuits and Christmas stollens, and spending time with his family. He was an avid Nebraska Cornhusker fan. A favorite pastime of his, was photographing all 254 Texas courthouses with Jan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Victor and Hazel Nielsen; his brother, Vic Nielsen; sister, Joyce Polette.

He is survived by his loving wife, Jan; his four children, Nancy Simdorn (Rusty) of Boerne, Texas, Betsy Omeis (Gene) of San Antonio, Texas, Mitch Nielsen Jr. (Kim) of Liberty Hill, Texas, Carol Nielsen of Dallas, Texas; sister-in-law, Barbara Dowell; his grandchildren, Eric (Kristin), Shannon (Cory), Scott, Morgan, Trent, Emily, and Katie; and one great-grandchild, Emery Mack.

A family memorial service will be held at Porter Loring Mortuary North in San Antonio, Texas.
