Obituary

Patrick Gordon Wells, Colonel, USAF (Ret.), age 86, passed away on April 25, 2017 in San Antonio, Texas. He was born on July 10, 1930 to Gawain (Gabe) Lester and Mary (Mayme) Ann Wells in Grinnell, Iowa. Gordon attended Cooper Elementary and Junior High School in Grinnell and graduated from Grinnell High School in 1948. During his youth, he was active in Boy Scouts and participated in both vocal and instrumental music activities in school. Following High School, Pat entered the University of Iowa in Iowa City and graduated in 1952 with a Bachelor of Science in Commerce degree. He participated in Reserve Officers Training Corps program while at the University of Iowa and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Air Force upon his graduation.

On June 14, 1952, he married his high school sweetheart, Marianna Louise Willer, by then a Registered Nurse after completing her training at Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Iowa City, Iowa. This began his life as a husband, Air Force officer, and father of five children. During his Air Force career, Pat progressed to the rank of Colonel with duty assignments as Comptroller and Resident Auditor following earlier experience in the fields of budget, accounting and finance, data automation, and management analysis. His assignments included Air Force organizations located in Colorado, Washington D.C., Georgia (2), California, New York, Virginia, Hawaii and Texas (2) with overseas assignments in Okinawa and Vietnam. Decorations and awards for Colonel Wells include Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, National Defense Service Medal with one bronze star, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with three bronze stars, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with palm, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Bronze Star, and the Legion of Merit.

Pat's hobby was barbershop music, and he was a long-time member and Past President of the San Antonio Chordsmen Chorus and he sang for several years in the "Gents In A-Chord" barbershop quartet. Following Pat's retirement in 1980, they remained in San Antonio and moved to Air Force Village II in 1999. He was a member of the Village Voices, Hand Bell Chorus, Village Serenaders and was an active member of the Catholic Community. For a few years while at the Village he enjoyed singing with the "Village Four" barbershop quartet. On February 14, 2017, he married Teddy McLeod-Wells.

Preceding him in death are his parents; his sisters, Patricia Lewis and Jackie Morgan, and his first wife of 61 years, Marianna. He is survived by his wife, Teddy McLeod-Wells and her family (McLeod and Harrison); five children and their families; Bonita Moore, Diana Diehl (John), Steven Wells (Anna) and their daughter, Denise, Carol McCulloch (Joe), and Robert Wells (Rachel); three grandsons, Scott Moore (Gina), Michael Elliott (Star), Dylon Wells; great- grandchildren, Onnika and Talia Moore and Ethan and Tristan Elliott; one niece; five nephews and their families.

Visitation will be on Sunday, May 7, 2017 at 5:00 pm with a Rosary at 6:30 pm at Porter Loring on McCullough. A Memorial Service, Monday, May 8, 2017, 10:00 am at the Blue Skies of Texas, High Flight Chapel, 5100 John D. Ryan Blvd., San Antonio, TX.

Interment with Full Military Honors will follow in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, at 2:00 pm.
