Obituary

Paul John Curtis, Lt Col USAF Retired, passed away on June 19, 2019 at his home in Garden Ridge, Texas and will be buried with military honors at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. Paul was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on January 18, 1955 to William and Dolores Curtis, both of whom preceded Paul in death. After graduating from college at The University of St. Thomas, where he played football and majored in History, he entered the US Air Force, establishing himself as one of the best pilots in the Air Force, with an unblemished record of achievement and service. He distinguished himself, primarily as a B1 Bomber pilot; and in 1989 his crew received the General Curtis E. LeMay award as the best crew in the Strategic Air Command (SAC). Paul obtained an MBA degree from The University of Montana while on active duty in the Air Force. His intellectual and military skills led to many stellar achievements, including Instructor Pilot of the year award in 1986 and being named as an Outstanding Young Man of America in 1987. In 1990 Paul received the Embry-Riddle Aviation Excellence Award and was recognized in the Congressional Record for outstanding duty performance in service of the United States of America. After a distinguished 20-year career, Paul retired from the Air Force and immediately continued his flying career as a commercial airlines Captain with Continental and later with United Airlines. After being diagnosed with irreversible multiple cancers, Paul had to leave his beloved flying career and spent the last several years of his life in his beautiful San Antonio home with his wife, Julie Reding Curtis. Paul was an unusually affable and loyal person to all his friends and family. Many friends from each phase of his life: childhood, college, Air Force, commercial aviation and the wonderful Garden Ridge neighborhood where he and Julie made their home, made special efforts to travel to San Antonio to be with him in his last weeks. He was indeed rich in loving friends and family. Paul is survived by his wife, Julie; brother, Tom; sister, Elizabeth; nieces, Lisa Winograd and Julie Minkkinen; great nieces, Lauren and Lindsey Winograd; nephews, Rob Curtis and Steve Harrington; and great nephew Jameson Curtis.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, July 1, 2019 at Porter Loring Mortuary North. Paul will be laid to rest when taps is sounded at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 2, 2019. A celebratory reception will follow at Paul and Julie's home. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Paul may do so by contributing in his name to St. Jude's Children Hospital or The Fisher House.
