Obituary for Peggy Smarkola

February 20, 1950 - March 24, 2018
San Antonio, Texas | Age 68

Peggy Smarkola went to be with the Lord on March 24, 2018 after a 29-year battle with cancer. A loving wife, a comforting and caring sister, a devoted member of the community, and a loyal friend to so many, Peggy was a role model and an inspiration to so many battling this devastating disease. Born in Canton, Ohio on 20 Feb 1950, her family moved to Lansdowne, PA where she attended Lansdowne Aldan H.S., and the University of Pennsylvania-Presbyterian Nursing School. Upon graduation, she passed her boards and earned her title of Registered Nurse (RN). She is preceded in death by her father, William Raybuck and her mother, Brenda Wellnitz Raybuck. She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Harold Smarkola and her brother, William Raybuck, Jr. A true Air Force couple, Peggy followed her husband through various assignments in the US and abroad, to include Selma, AL; Alexandria, LA; Merced, CA; Montgomery, AL; Washington, D.C.; San Antonio, TX; and Ramstein AB, Germany. Peggy worked as a RN in ICU, psych-rehab, medical surgical, private duty, and hospice care. In San Antonio, she served as a night charge supervisor at Hill Country Hospital. Constantly battling cancer, she fought breast, throat, lung, uterine, skin, and duodenal cancer-all separate, all primaries, never smoked, drank, or misused drugs. Peggy was the one at the annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure here in San Antonio who wore the following inspirational message on the pink celebration placard on her back: "In celebration of surviving breast, lung, throat, uterine, skin, and intestinal cancer"...In her neighborhood, she was constantly walking, picking up litter, cactus pedals, etc.; with her red hat, she kept the neighborhood 'looking good'... Peggy will be missed.

The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and caregivers at Brooke Army Medical Center and at Embrace Hospice.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Peggy's name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or the San Antonio Animal Defense League, 11300 Nacogdoches Road, San Antonio, TX 78217.

The family will receive guests beginning at 5:00 P.M. with a Memorial Celebration to follow at 6:00 P.M. on Thursday, April 19, 2018 at Porter Loring Mortuary North, 2102 North Loop 1604 East, San Antonio, Texas 78232 (between US 281 and Redland Road).
