Obituary

Ray Norman Ivey, age 78, passed away on October 2, 2019 in San Antonio, Texas. Ray was born March 16, 1941, in Detroit, Michigan to the late Walter Evans and Amy Lee (Campbell) Ivey, and was preceded in death by his older brother Donald Evans Ivey. After graduating from Cooley High School in 1959, he attended Western Michigan University and then enlisted in the Navy in 1961, where he served until 1967. He married the love of his life, Carole Ann Laing, on March 24, 1962, in Detroit, Michigan.

He worked for the United Way from 1967 until 1984, living in Detroit, Granada Hills, California, Cincinnati and Pittsburgh, when he left to form his own company, The Ivey Company. He then joined Consolidated Natural Gas, from whom he retired in 1998. He established a presence for the company in Washington, DC, which led to his own personal involvement in the establishment of the National First Ladies Library as well as the establishment of a permanent collection in the Smithsonian National Museum of American Art.

Ray enjoyed his retirement years, living in Penhook, Virginia, where he fished and played golf as often as he could. He spent 7 years in Portland, Oregon before moving to San Antonio. He was the proud and loving father of Jeffrey Evans (Janice Goodenow) Ivey, Noelle Suzanne Kehrley and Neil MacKenzie (Laurie Felsing) Ivey. Proud grandfather of Danny, Alexandria, Ray, Emily, Kendall, Jacob, Peyton, and Shea, and loving great-grandfather of Rian. He was an avid reader, loved to cook, wine enthusiast, history buff, and loved nothing more than to make people laugh. His sense of humor was well known and he loved talking to people. His proudest accomplishment was his family, and he will be greatly missed.
