Obituary

Raymond "Ray" Keith Purvis was born on October 16, 1963 in Los Angeles, California to Bobby E. Purvis and Shirley Purvis.

His battle with cancer ended when he passed from this life on his 55th birthday on October 16, 2018 in San Antonio, Texas.

Ray is survived by his wife Rebecca Sewell-Purvis; his children Christina Gomez and her husband John, Raymond Craig Purvis and his husband Marc Langdon, and David Purvis; his step-children Jordan Allen and his wife Amber, Danielle Lane, and Kendall Lopez; and four grandchildren Vanessa Campos, Dalton Kirkpatrick, Cadence Allen, and Owen Allen.

Ray is also survived by his father Bobby E. Purvis; his mother Shirley Purvis; his sisters Stacey Smith, Maria Whittear, Kathy Adelson, and Kathleen Kennard; his brothers Bobby J. Purvis, Michael Purvis, Joseph Kennard, and Adam Kennard; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and an abundance of friends.

Ray was preceded in death by his step-mother Rosalie Purvis.

Ray grew up in Northern California in Nevada County. He graduated from Nevada Union High School in 1981. Ray joined the United States Air Force in 1981, attending Basic Training in San Antonio, Texas. His technical skills served him well as he quickly progressed through the enlisted ranks. The Air Force decided he could better serve his country as an officer, so he attended Officer Training School and continued his career as an officer. During his time in the Air Force, he earned a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Arizona and a Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of New Mexico. In 1997, the Air Force brought Ray to San Antonio for his last active duty assignment where he later retired as a Captain in 2001. Ray worked as an Electrical Engineer for The MITRE Corporation in San Antonio for the last 18 years.

Ray was passionate about life and lived it to the fullest degree!

Ray met his wife Rebecca in 2006 and they were married on April 19, 2008. Ray shared his passion for music and travel with his wife. They started a tradition of going to the Austin City Limits Music Festival every October. Ray and Rebecca enjoyed cruising all over the Caribbean and to Alaska several times. At home, Ray claimed "Pool Boy" as his part-time job. He took great pride in keeping the pool in perfect condition and insisted on being paid in beer and wings for his services.

Ray was an avid runner and completed several marathons and half marathons; the last of which was in 2015 just a few weeks before being diagnosed with cancer. Ray fought cancer with the same strength and courage that he utilized when running. He served as a mentor and source of support for others who were also battling cancer.

Ray loved a good joke and would seek out people to tell his favorites. His sense of humor was surpassed only by his incredible work ethic. Ray would say that he was at his sharpest by 4 AM and would often be up and working on his latest software code several hours before sunrise.
Ray would tell you that his greatest accomplishments were being a loving father and husband. He was immensely proud of his family and was at his happiest when surrounded by his loved ones.

One of the last things Ray said to Rebecca was, "We had a lot of happy!" Our family has adopted this mantra to honor his memory. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends until we see him again.

Services for Ray will be held on Monday, October 29, 2018. A memorial service will be held at 11:30 AM (guests may arrive as early at 10:30 AM) at Porter Loring North Mortuary located at 2102 N Loop 1604 East, San Antonio, TX 78232. Burial will be at 1:00 PM at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery located at 1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd., San Antonio, TX 78209. A reception to celebrate Ray's life will be held at Ray and Rebecca's home in Helotes, Texas at 3:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully asks that you consider donating in Ray's honor to the American Head and Neck Society.
