He was a retired United Methodist Minister of the following churches in Upstate New York: Rathbone, Cameron Mills, Friend, Yatesville, Avoca, and Elmira. Reverend Carrillo graduated Colgate Rochester Divinity School with a Masters in Divinity in 1999.

Rene Carrillo spent his early years in Connecticut and attended Choate through high school. As a teenager he moved to California where he learned to sail, worked as a commercial fisherman, and attended the University of California Berkeley graduating with a Bachelor's degree in English Literature in 1973. He loved nature and trips to the Adirondacks with his dogs.
