Obituary

Richard Carl Shaffer, 72, died Monday, November 27, 2017 at the Methodist Stone Oak Hospital in San Antonio. Born July 3, 1945, in Chambersburg, PA, he was the son of the late Merle E. and Ethel I. (Barnhart) Shaffer.

Mr. Shaffer was a loving husband, an incredible father & grandfather, a loyal friend, and a proud U.S. Marine. He was always a person to be counted on and man of his word. He was a 1963 graduate of Chambersburg Area Senior High School, an active US Marine from 1963 to 1967, and very involved in the local community. He was a member of many local Chambersburg associations including the Marine Corps, AMVETS, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Chambersburg Club, Loyal Order of the Moose, and Orrstown Masonic Lodge. In addition, he spent several years volunteering for Goodwill Volunteer Fire Company.

Mr. Shaffer also played for the Chambersburg Cardinals in 1969, and spent many years playing softball and umpiring in the local softball leagues.

He is survived by his wife, Carol A. (Strock) Shaffer; one daughter, Nicole N. (Shaffer) Folsom and son-in-law Eric Folsom of San Antonio, TX; three grandchildren, Kirstin Perviance of San Antonio, TX, Molly (Folsom) Boatright and Caleb Boatright of Tulsa, OK, and Ashton Folsom of San Antonio, TX; one great granddaughter, Jillian J. Boatright, and several beloved nieces and one nephew.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Robert E. Shaffer and Donald S. Shaffer; and sister, Joyce E. Shaffer.

A celebration of life will be held privately for family and friends in San Antonio. Funeral services will be held graveside at a later date in Chambersburg, PA.
