Obituary

On Sunday, May 3, 2020, Richard Ernest Stakes passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones. He was very recently preceded in death by his beloved wife of 55 years, Jacqueline Ann, who passed away on March 9, 2020. Born on April 20, 1941 in San Antonio, Texas to Archie and Ludivine Stakes, Richard attended grade school at St. Peter Princes of the Apostles Catholic Church, and graduated from Alamo Heights High School in 1959. Thereafter, Richard attended St. Mary's University but his passion for selling soon landed him a job at Hutchins Bros clothing store in San Antonio, Texas. He married his beautiful wife on September 18, 1965 and soon thereafter they moved to Houston, Texas where Richard became a men's clothing factory representative. This experience led to the Stakes purchasing Gregory's clothing store in nearby Baytown, Texas.
In the mid 1970's, the family moved to McAllen, Texas and Richard, in partnership with Jackie's family, started S&S Plumbing Supply. Richard involved himself in the McAllen Rotary and Chamber of Commerce, and was a very active part of the St. John's Episcopal Church, serving in the Vestry and as Junior Warden. He loved nothing more than to help with BBQs for church family gatherings as well as building the annual All Saints Day Haunted House.
In 2000, Richard and Jackie moved back to San Antonio where their life together had begun, and Richard worked for HD/Hughes Supply for the remainder of his career.
Richard will be remembered for his acts of service and kindness to both family and friends, as well as for the wonderful memories of hunting, fishing, and camping trips he participated in with them. He had an eye for a bargain and a talent for making something spectacular out of nothing. Richard is survived by their two children, Lee Randall Stakes (wife Shea) and Kathryn Miles Payne (husband Christopher). He is also survived by his beautiful grandchildren, Wesley Nicole Stakes, Carson William Stakes (their mother, Melissa) of Kingwood, Texas and Preston Chadwick Payne of San Antonio, Texas. He is also survived by his two brothers Carl Stakes (Martha) of Kerrville, Texas, Robert Stakes (Sue) of San Antonio, Texas, his sister JoAnne Story of San Antonio, Texas and six wonderful nieces and eight nephews.
His family would like to thank Embrace Hospice and the compassionate caretakers for their care of Richard during the last weeks of his life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Boysville Auxiliary of San Antonio which will help fund the Boysville children's library.
