Major Richard L. Ward, Jr., (Rich), U.S. Army (ret.) age 57, transitioned from his earthly life to eternal life on Sunday, January 7, 2018 in Gainesville, FL. He was born on January 17, 1960 in Tuskegee, AL to the late Richard L. Ward, Sr. and Martha Ware Ward.
Rich professed Christ at a young age and was baptized at New Providence Baptist Church in Columbus, GA. Since 1998, he was a faithful member of Resurrection Baptist Church.
Rich graduated from Columbus High School in Columbus, GA. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga where he attended on a football scholarship. He received Masters Degrees from Central Michigan University and American Public University.
Rich was commissioned into the U.S. Army and served around the world to include the Middle East during the Gulf War and The Old Guard. Throughout his career he received numerous medals and honors to include a Bronze Star, Ranger Tab, Air Assault Tab and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.
Rich was initiated into Psi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated in 1979. He was a lifetime member of the fraternity and was an active member in the Delta Rho Lambda Alumnae Chapter in San Antonio, TX.
Rich is survived by his wife, Vanessa Sharp Ward (Cha-Cha); daughters, English N. Ward (Houston, TX) and Ellen J. Ward; son, Garrett R. Ward; mother, Martha W. Ward (Columbus, GA); brothers, Curtis Ward (Claudia) (Fairburn, GA) and Maxwell Jones (Columbus, GA); sisters, Lisa Ward (Columbus, GA), Edith Ward Smith (Jonesboro, GA), Kathy Jones (Columbus, GA); Brothers-in-law, Anthony Sharp (Theresa) (Columbia, TN) and Clayton Sharp (Norma) (Columbia, TN); aunt, Sillerean Johnson (Camp Hill, AL) and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
Rich was godfather to Jackie Fussner Slagle (Jason) (Anchorage, AK) and Sarah Gereda (Temecula, CA).
Rich worked in Army North with a team of people that he admired greatly. The first responder firefighters and EMTs with whom he worked tirelessly meant so much to him. His coworkers at Fort Sam Houston were an extension of his family and were with him until the end.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 24, 2018, at Porter Loring Mortuary North.

10:00 A.M.

Pastor Ray Brown, Sr. will extend words of comfort. Interment with Full Military Honors will follow in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. Pallbearers will be LTC Larry Fussner, U.S. Army (ret), Marcus Jones, Keenan Ward, Dustin Sharp, Davin Sharp, Duran Sharp; Honorary Pallbearers: UT-Chattanooga Football Team 1978-1982, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Members of V Corp, 3rd Brigade 1988-1991, Members of The Old Guard 1991-1994.
The family of Rich Ward acknowledges with grateful appreciation all visits, prayers and every act of kindness shown during this very difficult time. We give special thanks to Kathy Beech, Marcus Jones, LeAnna McKinney, Tracy King, Paula Tucker, Susan Young Hunt, Pastor & Mrs. James Gant, Boysville, Inc., Resurrection Baptist Church, William Sherman and Army North.
