Obituary

Richard R. Martinez, age 87, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, July 11, 2020. He was born in Sabinal, Texas, on February 12, 1933, to his loving parents, Blas Martinez and Cecilia (Rodriguez) Martinez. He was the 5th of 9 children, including Emilio Martinez, Rosa Martinez (Rose Ripley), Blas Martinez Jr., Gabriel Martinez, Esperanza Martinez (Hope Zepeda), Angelita Martinez (Angie Vargas), Jose Martinez, and Raul Martinez.

He began his diverse career in the United States Air Force, serving from 1952-1956. He attained the rank of Staff Sargent and was stationed at the Sondrestrom Air Base in Greenland and various stateside Air Force facilities. After an honorable discharge, he served four additional years in the USAF reserves. In 1956 he joined the San Antonio Police Department and rose to the rank of Detective. In 1965 he accepted a position with the Federal Government, serving in the United States Department of State for 20 years. His assignments included Mexico City and various Central and South American countries, until his retirement in 1986.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Emilio, and his brother, Gabriel; and his wife Marisol (Salazar) Martinez, who passed away in 1985. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Maryanne (Horn) Martinez; his children, Richard G. Martinez and wife, Denise Martinez, Rene R. Martinez and wife, Ann Marie Martinez, Rachel D. DeSot and husband, Tom F. DeSot Jr.; his grandchildren, Monique D. Martinez and husband, Adam Martinez, Gabriel Martinez, Jacob Martinez, Marisa L. Martinez, Laurel E. Martinez; his great-grandchildren, Ayden Martinez, Adrick Martinez, and Alek Martinez; and the mother of his children, Rebecca G. Martinez.

Visitation will be on Monday, July 27, 2020 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Porter Loring on McCullough.
