Obituary

Captain Robert G. Walter was born on 7 June 1941 in West Allis, Wisconsin. Following graduation from the University of Notre Dame in 1963 with a Bachelor of Science Degree, he attended Marquette University's School of Dentistry and earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery in 1967. During dental school, Captain Walter was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force. He returned to the University of Notre Dame in 1967 where he studied microbiology until 1972.

Captain Walter was assigned to the School of Aerospace Medicine, Brooks Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas in January 1972. In November 1974, Major Walter transferred to the U.S. Navy Dental Crops and was assigned to the Naval Regional Dental Center, Great Lakes, Illinois until April 1975. LCDR Walter began his first tour of duty at the Naval Dental Research Institute (NDRI) and remained there until June 1978. He was promoted to Commander in the spring of 1977.

From June 1978 to July 1979, CDR Walter was deployed with the 3rd FSSG, Okinawa, Japan, where he served as Branch Head of the Camp Foster Dental Clinic. CDR Walter returned to the Naval Dental Research Institute and served for an additional four years. During this tour, CDR Walter progressed from an associate investigator to Director of the Scientific Department. He was promoted to his present rank in March 1983.

Captain Walter was ordered to the Naval Dental Clinic, Norfolk, Virginia, in October 1983 and was assigned as Officer-in-Charge of the Branch Dental Clinic, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Captain Walter returned to NDRI for his third tour in August 1985.

In November 1985, Captain Walter assumed command of the Naval Dental Research Institute. From 1986 through 1991, he was assigned additional responsibilities as Program Manager for dental research for the Naval Medical Research and Development Command, as Specialty Advisor for dental research for the Navy Dental Corps, and as the Navy Dental Corps representative on the American Standards Committee MD 156 for Dental Materials, Instruments and Equipment for the American Dental Association.

In September 1989, Captain Walter assumed command of the Naval Submarine Medical Research Laboratory and held that position until September 1992. In October 1992, Captain Walter became Commanding Officer of the Naval Medical Research Institute, Bethesda, Maryland and held that position until June 1995. In July 1995, Captain Walter once again assumed command of the Naval Submarine Medical Research Laboratory.

In November 1997, Captain Walter assumed the duties as Director, Naval Medical Research and Development Laboratories, Bureau of Medicine and Surgery and as Director, Medical Science & Technology, Division, Office of Naval Research.

His personal decorations include the Legion of Merit with God Star, Meritorious Service Medal with Gold Star, Navy Commendation Medal, the National Defense Ribbon, and the Fleet Marine Force Ribbon. Additional educational achievements include a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management from the University of Maryland and a Masters degree in Business Administration from DePaul University

The family will receive friends from 9:00 to 9:30 a.m., Monday, November 26, 2018 at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 10703 Wurzbach Road.
